How much air should my supplied air spray mask be using?

you could always rig up some extra air tanks... maybe big LPG cylinders ? (few people on here and elsewhere use them)

once they're up to pressure you'll have more time to use air before pressure drops too low for you.... and they get a good chance to catch up every time you stop using air

The whistle can be adjusted ツ It was set to go off at 60 psi. I set it to go off at 50psi. Hopefully this will give my compressors some breathing room.

The waistbelt filter has an outlet for the spray gun. But this will be putting out the same pressure as is going to the mask. So how is the pressure to the spray gun supposed to be regulated?

I just use a small inline gun regulator, but i suppose it the depends on the spray guns air requirement as to how much regulation is required

Mask plus hvllp gun used loads.... I was running a 25cfm hydrovane which coped ok up to 1.8mm, any bigger and things just didn't work properly

ive never understood the fear around painting, a good mask like above and you will have no issues.

I've never seen an air fed mask so I'm king of guessing... the whistle is some kind of pressure/flow regulator ?

if you have that mask running from it's own compressor.... then set the whistle pressure as low as it will go ? - you only really care about cfm through the mask not pressure ?


actually... if the whistle so you don't run the pressure on your air line down too low incase you're using the same air ling for your spray gun ?

The whistle is there to warn you that the air supply is reducing and that more air is in short supply. Check compressor or hoses for kinks. I have a half mask air feed that I use when welding aluminium that doesn't have a whistle, have trapped the supply hose once or twice then wondered why breathing had become harder

My God man, you'll have the anti-Iso posse on your back harder than a fallen tower block for that comment!

The points/problems being posted here are exactly why myself and others don't use an air fed system when spraying 2k, rather sensible precautions, the next best alternative equipment and an awareness of the hazards of paints that contain Isocyanates, I'm not knocking anybody that does, just giving my reasons why I don't.

I appreciate that, but how do you know that those masks filter out the bad stuff at all?

I don't, but I do know that a Draeger full face and Sunstrom filters have to, to meet the standards they claim.

brother in law has been spraying for forty plus years and is not dead and has no respiratory problems, i would think that is proof enough they work. they wouldn't allow them on the market if they didn't work, air fed is fine if you have a 3ph cabinet screw compressor with a drier system etc but for Joe blogs its overkill.

It seems nobody knows when & why you use an air mask or charcoal mask.......
In an industrial spraybooth, with air changes (extraction system employed) every couple of minutes then you can use a charcoal mask for a limited amount of time, read the mask specification, this is your responsibilty...
In a home garage, with no air changes, a charcoal mask effectiveness is greatly reduced, (your risk basically) an airmask (with proper micro filtration) is the only way to ensure your respiratory safety.
If you take your personal safety seriously ask a professional, not an amateur

The answer to that is simple; A properly maintained and working air fed system all day, everyday if you have that as a choice, most of us don't though, we have neither the money nor the space for it and don't spray enough to justify it, it would be cheaper for us to just take it to a pro sprayer but we don't because we are capable of doing ourselves and know exactly what has or hasn't been done in the prep and finish, it also gives us a sense of achievement and pride as well as forming a kind of tactile bond with the vehicle being restored.
Bear in mind that a badly maintained, inefficient or faulty air fed which allows oil into the breathing air is just as bad as the Iso hazard you're trying to avoid.

Because they use a 2 stage system, first any filtration medium is designed for a specific range of toxins and they have to meet the specified requirements for that toxin; second they are pressure fed and if you have a slight leak somewhere where a toxin can potentially enter, it cannot enter as the positive pressure is exiting there, or blowing it away.

Exactly. And none of the major companies have developed filter masks that are safe with Isocyanate so you're relying on the untested claims of some small retailer.

That's interesting! Your PDF references it's claim. I actually phoned 3M last week, they put me through to their tech department who told me no major manufacturer has developer and ISO mask, and gave a few reasons, one of which was that it wouldn't meet some standard or other. Well, too late for me, I bought the air fed mask already :/
