How to get such a decorative weld?

Eric Cheney bless him could tell you which of his guys built a frame from a quick glance of the weld/braze. they were based locally and it was somewhere to go drool over some very nice bikes

Eric always had a rolling chassis on display at Ken Heanes motorcycles in Fleet, really was a thing of beauty. As a nipper it was something I always wanted but couldn't afford.

Nearest I get to a stack of dimes with a mig is when its cranked right up on spray transfer, poor excuse for more amps and bigger wire.

Friend of mine has a CCM Bobber motorcycle, the frame is tig welded and then just clear coated, not painted, so the welds are on display. It’s four years old, and all the newer ones are painted, because the frame welder apparently retired and they can’t find anybody who can weld good enough, and reliably enough, to display openly.
More reason to practise my tig welding, I reckon….

PS Worked with a person many years ago who, when he was mig welding he always used very low power and by manipulation built the weld up . When for example welding on a heavy circular boss, on completion of 365 degrees he had to veer off as there was insufficient amps to fuse into his starting point. The result, instead of a circular weld was a Q shaped weld.

interestingly (in my opinion at least) i was chatting to one of the drag racers (single seater top fuel 'style' thing, but set up for 'bracket racing', so engines last a couple of events, rather than a pass) at the autosport show a few years back, and their cage was just clear coated with a very thin layer of lacquer, instead of paint, but that was so that it was easy to visually inspect for cracks in the structure at every event..... reading between the lines, i suspect some of the cages had previously had filler wiped round some ugly welds, which had caused some issues..... tbh, im always surprised that cages are allowed to be painted for these sorts of reasons..... would make a lot more sense if they had to be left as welded imo....
