How to recognize slag inclusion by eye.

before jumping in and taking the mickey; english is not his native language just as french is not mine, and, it can be very easy to use phrases; expressions, and words that you think are right but in fact convey the wrong impression or meaning.
He may have picked the slag inclusion by eye bit from a job spec written in english and it does not translate very well into his native tongue. He may in fact have been taught about slag inclusion.
At least he had the courage to go on a foreign forum and the interest in his job to try and find stuff out.

I did, I think most of the guys who have enough hours in and learnt MMA correctly during their time know most of the slag traps visually but I know a fair few guys now haven't ever done much Stick and wont often use flux core (indeed I don't even see the point, used it once and got half way through and put it to one side and reached for the stick) Yes I did the same and found some stuff I hadn't seen before

I'm sorry for my silly question and my grammatical mistake. But I haven't learn about welding in university. I have recently gotten a job as a inspector. In 3 months, I'll be trained by my colleague, but unfortunately I don't have a good relationship with them. So I don't think that I'll learn much from them. I tried using google, but I didn't recognize them clearly. I work with carbon steel and they are often rusted. So I don't recognize the rust and slag. May anyone help me, please

i also wondered at that little faux pas ? Anyway the thing about slag inclusion is that if its bad and on the surface its easy to recognise, and if its inside the weld you have no chance of seeing it unless you have and x-ray machine or you are one of the X men or something (or there were those x-ray specs from when i was a kid)

you know what flux slag is on top of an arc weld? Well its just that same coating stuck inside of the weld, usually just a bit at the sides where its difficult to scrape off with wire brush or hammer. So you have to grind it out. Thats no problem, its when the stuff is in the middle of a weld, sticking half in and half out of the solidified metal that it becomes a problem. As it indicates a poor weld, probably better ground out and done again. Its about technique really. Too high a current sometimes leads to undercutting which often leads to difficult to remove slag inclusion.

not really sure what to say if you cant see the imperfections in this pic. Where the two stringers meet you can see tiny bits of slag trapped between them also on the sides. There are not going to be massive chunks unless the welder is seriously bad. But a good weld will just have the slag peel off all in one, or a few bits, and wont have to wire brush or hammer it. Like the pic at the bottom.

why not do some welds yourself and try and get some inclusions on purpose, Certainly you could look at that a lot closer than pics online.

I tried using google, but I didn't recognize them clearly. I work with carbon steel and they are often rusted. So I don't recognize the rust and slag. May anyone help me, please

You bothering to inspect but work with rusty steel, strange! Many of us will take off the milscale coating on new steel before welding it yet your guys weld on rust and inspect as a separate operation

No, I mean when I inspect the weld, they are rusted, and so I can't know whether the sign is rust or slag on surface of weld

To carry out any real form of inspection you will need to be properly trained, the flaws that you can see by eye are only the really big ones. Most inspectors that I have worked with will insist that the rust and old paint are cleaned off the weld to be inspected.

In my company, every machine has too many weld, and we must conduct visual inspection before they are cleaned

If the metal has been MIG welded with flux cored wire the hope is that all the slag will be on top where it can be brushed or chipped off. If a shielding gas has been used there shouldn't be any significant slag anyway.

However if the metal was as rusty when it was being welded as it is while being inspected then, gas or gasless, the odds are high that most of the inclusions will be deep inside the weld where only ultrasonic or X-ray examination can reveal them. Somehow I doubt that your employer is much bothered about how good the welds are, preferring to include a 'inspected by inspector Number 7' note inside the delivery packaging. That way if the the welds tear apart he's got someone else to blame.

FCAW mig can give slag inclusions but they are easy to see.

I'm new welding inspector, I has start this job today. And i don't know how to recognize slag inclusion by eye.
Could anyone explain to me how to recognize them, especially by the pictures of them.

When u say your a new welding inspector do you mean you have just passed your CSWIP or
equivalent or do you mean you are just training with out experience? If it's the first one you need to re do the exam. I have done that course to level 2 and spotting slag in a weld is by far the easiest part about it. I will answer your question though. After you have removed the slag from the surface of a weld bead sometimes parts of it can become trapped usually in the side wall of the prep or between beads. It can be black and shiny or a matt finish depending on the consumable. and needs to come out before the next run. If your inspecting a solid wire weld then your more than likely confusing slag with silicon islands. These are usually a brown colour and sit more on top of the weld bead. Again should be removed before the next weld is placed.

Sorry to the OP I just seem this. Clean the rust off. If your still not sure DPI will make it very clear.
