How would you machine this wedge shape?

For those that don't recognise it, it's a 'bearing separator' to bring a bearing that is up against a shoulder forward to create a gap so that a bearing puller can get it's claws behind to get a grip. They are widely available in smaller sizes, in fact I have one or two, but I want a huge one to pass over a bearing whose outer is about 165 mm diameter and not finding one was hoping to make one.

The basic shape is no issue but that tapered non circular wedge that does the actual forcing is my problem - how would you machine it. I'm thinking probably EN8 hardened and tempered.

It’s a constant radius isn’t it? Can you not turn both halves at the same time in a full circle and then cut out the middle bit?

Cock the head over on your bridgeport, fix it down on the egde of a 10" rotary table on top of some ally packers and use a 2" face mill to cut the bottom taper using the table to turn it.

Mine is old thou - I know this because it takes a 1" AF socket on the nuts and bolts!

If you are close to Norfolk you can borrow mine.

Two line 2d wireframe in cad and mill it. Easy

get some thick plate the size a bit bigger than you u require and put it in a 4 jaw chuck bore it out to the dish required then slice a few inch wedge out of it in the middle and that will leave the oval u require when bolted together

make it one piece large diameter, then cut a slice out the middle would be the easy way to do it .

Also over the 36 years I've been trading I have collected the full SP set - all of it - on top of what he gave me.

I often use - this big bearing spliter for getting car wheel bearings off stub axles - just nip the bearing splitter in it and them push the stub thru on a hydraulic press.

Can you weld two parts to some plate at correct distance and bolt plate to lathe face plate or rotary table.

Machine circular part and then grind off welds?

Almost but not quite - that one needs the roller cage to be removed first and is really a clamp, whereas the splitter goes behind the outer and the face that it is up against and forces the wedge in creating a gap for a three leg puller's 'toes' to get in.
