Hydraulic press support pin size and strength.

Can someone clever tell me if 20mm diameter mild steel will be strong enough to support the table on a hydraulic press?
the vertical channels are 100mm and 8mm thick at the flanges. Same channel for horizontals but obviously resting underneath the flanges. 20 ton capacity, so 5 tons on the ends of each pin? Pins 200mm long.

Not so sure about clever

It will take a lot more than 5 tons to sheer a 20mm bar, it may elongate the hole on the channel over time.

Thanks, the channel flanges are 8mm thick so should last a while. I just tend to over engineer things...but have some 20mm bar.

When I made mine I looked at a sealey model the same size and upped the dimensions a little.

Just been out to check my Sealy 15T press and it has 19mm pins and they are still dead straight after many years...hope this helps

here's a photo of my effort...
it's 25 ton Tangye and has just 25mm black round bar...plenty of times the jack has gone overload relief.....

We need some more information to give you a definitive answer.
If we assume you’re using mild steel with roughly 400mpa of ultimate tensile strength, you should have a single shear of around 8t. If you have two pins with two shear planes you will have 16t of minimum shear per pin, so provided each plane is loaded evenly you will be good for 32t. An uneven load will alter the ultimate load of course.

Yeah two pins 20mm mild steel, two shear points in each pin, so 32 tons? Level, even load if I can weld it all together straight!

Mine will be a bit beefier around the top, maybe narrower. I have an air over hydraulic 20t jack that I'm going to modify to work upside down, so I can eliminate the moving parts of the guide you have. That's if I can find a 75mm spanner to get the nut off. I may have to mill one out of some plate or maybe weld one together.

The box section I have is rounded on the corners, and thinner wall. Virtually every press I've seen has channel supports or very deep, very heavy plate.
