Hyundai HYMMA 160 inverter

So I finally got fed with the cheap (free!!) buzz box I've been using for stick welding....also fed with the cheap (also free!) electrodes!

Decided to go all out and spend £109 on the Hyundai machine having read no reviews!

Now feeling a bit worried...but all it has to do is be better than the terrible buzz box it is replacing to be honest.

The good news is the money I saved I threw at a set of weld equip electrodes and one of those true colour parweld masks I've had my eye on.

Worst case I've just wasted £109 ....but am interested if anyone else has one of these machines?

I really don't do a lot of stick welding....I mostly do MIG....so this is just for the odd jobs that need doing where the MIG can't be used (eg outdoors!)

I can't fault Hyundai products, currently have a generator, mower and strimmer, just make sure you register for the warranty.

The generator is now 4-5 years old, the AVR failed after the first winter at the stables, but a quick call to the (UK) service centre and they posted a replacement immediately

Yea I agree...I own a Hyundai Tucson which I really like....so decided if they could put cars together that well then welders would be no problem for them...twas an impulse purchase for sure!

Then after I bought it I started to worry....not about the £109....more about getting something that was junk because I decided to go cheap!

Some time ago I purchased 60 kgs of Hyundai mma eletrodes, once I'd sorted out the required ampage setting for each rod size/position.

I wouldnt have a problem ordering/using them again, a good rod in my books.

I think weight wise this should be around the 5kg-6kg mark (hopefully).

I just noticed they also have a 200A version of the same machine for £169....for what I need I think the 160A will be enough....the 200A seems to come with a better earth and rod holder so I was tempted.

But this is a budget purchase....I need to stick to the budget otherwise I'll be buying a £2k AC/DC TIG setup which also has MMA!

The idea is basically it'll be a machine I can use outdoors and if someone "borrows" it and fails to return it then I've only lost £109!

What are you waiting for? I would have had it out of the box at the first opportunity and given it a work out even if only on a bit of scrap rather than wondering about how it may perform

Yea me too....only ordered it last night so think delivery is due tomorrow (Amazon Prime).

I like that for a cheap inverter it actually has a digital amperage display. Even expensive ones don't have that. It's not strictly necessary, but it's a plus point.

I bet it will run smoother and more predictable than your buzzbox. I'd be interested to know if it has auto arc force... I kinda like a bit of arc force, it means you can ram a rod in there without it sticking.

So an impulse cancellation and another impulse purchase later....this thread is now about the 200a MMA for £169!!!!

I prefer a descent earth and stick holder...I decided in the end I'd end up replacing those bits so why not just go for the better machine to start with!!!

Munkul....I think this one has the auto arc force feature (not sure about the 160A)....also strangely it's 2KG lighter than the other one!

The Hyundai MMA (200A) arrived today...nicely packaged and so far seems nicely made. The earth and rod clamps are descent. I like the ends that plug into the machine being solid bits of brass.

Will be a few days before I can have a play but so far all looks good.

Let's hope the welding lives up to expectations! I had to buy a 13a converter but that's no big deal.

get outside put a bit of metal in a vice and strike up run a few lines take 20 mins

My MIG machine also does MMA, but it is so heavy and bulky, I think 33kg without wire; so I'm tempted to pick one of these up soon if reviews go well, as it'll give me a nice portable solution for welding bits and pieces away from home base.

What size Dinse sockets does the machine have please?

Wish I saw that before I bought mine; my true colour cost £88 and I'm not all that keen on the headband that came with it. Where did you buy this one please, are you able to take a photo of the inside of the helmet so I can see the quality of the helmet internals, as I might pick one of these up also :-)

I'm itching to have a play with the welder but I'm straight out this evening and can't get messy!

Same here regarding the portability....my thinking is just something light that I can pull out of the cupboard and use without too much hassle. I'll measure up the lead plugs tomorrow and let you know what size they are....the rod holder basically looks the same as the parweld one I've seen.

What size Dinse sockets does the machine have please?

The pin is 9mm diameter that pushes into the machine....and I didn't even know it had a name until I just looked it up. My Kemppi machine has hard wired cables which is a bit annoying now I see how easy these are to connect and disconnect!
