Your Jag has Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist does have steering input, but can be overridden / turned off. I have noticed some LKA are a bit 'fierce' - Volvo especially so. LKA & LDW both 'back off' when you put the relevant indicator on.

TBH, I thought that was just 2 different names for what was essentially the same thing.

I still find it surprising that a car can effectively steer itself based upon what it deems as being necessary.

Really? Surely not. Mine would vibrate the steering wheel but wouldn't actually steer the car. It can't do, can it?

Yep. Had it on a rental in the USA - quite a shock as was pretty strong and didn't like being over-ridden.

I've driven from SEATAC to Olympia many times over the last few years, and I can't think of a single trip where I didn't see at least one accident - so I can see a good argument to have systems trying to keep inattentive drivers from hurting others.

I am sorry but the attitudes to technology are laughable. I agree some of the latest driver aids are a bit pointless but things like hill hold are very useful in big multi storey car parks when it is busy. I remember helping a young lad who fried his Corsa clutch queing to get into one

Auto headlights have transformed driving for me and my wife, we live very rural and without modern lights night driving is made very difficult

Regarding what happens in case of fault on the systems? well speaking from first hand experience, when a system fails it deactivates.

Yes - ABS failed on a car I was using . . it deactivated the brakes! Or rather, would not allow the pedal to be pressed down - it fought back - two feet on the pedal to stop the thing.

My Jaguar iPace had LDW and yes I turned it off as it was annoying. Even with it turned off it still retained some functionality. Good example was some road works on the A4042 dual near us, they had narrowed the lanes and dropped the limit to 40mph, don't have a problem with that but the supposedly deactivated LDA kept picking up on the torched over white lines and would encourage me to correct my position on the road even though it meant I would be straddling the 2 temporary lanes

I don't have an issue with improving car safety and some of the newer safety features are useful, e.g BIL has a Toyota someting, its 2 yrs old, it has blind spot warning thingies in the door mirrors that warn you of vehicles alongside you, nice but not essential

But, I can live without most of them, the following would like on my vehicles, electric windows, central locking, electric folding mirrors, cruise control, A/C, follow me home lights, heated seats and memory for the seats and mirrors and heated front screen. Appreciate most of these are not exactly new tech but its what I want

Nice to have would be rain sensing wipers, the Jag iPace implementation was rubbish, my 09 Jeep Grand Cherokee is spot on

I also prefer tactile controls, i.e. knobs, buttons, dials etc rather than touch screen but its not a deal breaker

But, I am not the target audience for a new car and sounds like most of the forum is in the same boat. Bit like all the peeps complaining about the new Defender or the Jag rebranding. We are not, and probably never will be their target audience as we don't buy new cars so they don't care about us. They need to sell cars and make a profit to exist, if we aren't buying their cars they need to appeal to those who do.

I had the Jag iPace from new, it was a lovely car but my lifestyle, needs and wants mean I need something a little older that I don't worry about lobbing tools and oily car parts in the boot, where I park it or sticking 2 muddy dogs in the back after a walk up the mountain

Same here...car is simply another tool like a hammer or a mig machine.

A lot of the new tech is very useful and I like it....some of it is useless but that's also fine. I draw the line at things that cause a safety concern...like trying to drive my car off the A1 onto a slip road when I'm doing 60mph!

Does all this lane control nonsense mean that if I take a smooth line through a series of bends that would take me over the white line a few times it will " fight" me each time . If so that must explain all those drivers who slavishly follow the center of their lane regardless . Perhaps I had better stay with my Ludmobile forever.

I've just seen a couple of articles that say lane assist won't work if the windscreen in front of the camera is dirty. No mention of limp mode ;-)

You'll get lots of warnings on the dash saying that various systems have been disabled due to the camera being obscured.
Anything with lane assist, is most likely using the camera for other functions as well.

Plus the duct tape is likely to damage the wiper blade.

In heavy rain or snow, lane assist, emergency braking, and cruise control wouldn't work. When it worked, the emergency braking was truly terrifying the first time I experienced it, and it was predictably caused by Mr Stupid pulling in front of me because his slip road was only one mile away...

A mate of mine drives a brand new FH16 and his emergency braking is activated by the sign for a farm shop when he gets near the yard. So much for modern technology...

My manual Dodge here in the UK has a foot operated parking brake. Did require some getting used to - in an auto Challenger, you simply keep your foot on the brake and shove the person down with the left. Did that in my manual version a couple of times at first . . . Problem being I'd missed the step of taking it out of gear before I shoved the parking brake down

My '50 Chevy truck had a foot 'handbrake' when I bought it, I hated it; it was either on, or yank the release and it was completely off, must have been fun doing a hillstart on a really steep hill with the original manual box. But then again I hated the Three speed auto that some previous owner had installed with a passion. So I decided to cure both issues. The gearbox is a Tremec 5 speed, the handbrake is from a slightly earlier Chevy truck.

Just realised that must be why oncoming drivers get over in narrow country lanes any more, they just keep coming in the middle of the road till they have to stop, then sit there looking stupidly bewildered.

My mate with the VW E5 reckons it will follow the GPS route unassisted, stays in lane, slows for roundabouts and other cars etc. I find it hard to believe but he swears it’s almost self driving.

YEP ! I'll admit to that . Surely if you are on the inside lane and they (we) straight line the roundabout how are they (we) affecting you by clipping the apex ( center) and staying well out of your way? Presuming they are in the R.H.lane. Most road markings are for assistance and not mandatory .
