I Need New Rod Holder - Any Recommendations?

Hi folks,

My Powercraft's rod holder is knackered... The die cast metal where it joins on to the release button is broken, requiring me to lever the jaws open with a screwdriver. Because of this I'm on the lookout for a new rod holder, any recommendations?

I was thinking about the twist type instead of the spring loaded jaws, anyone got experience of the twist type rod holder?

i replaced mine with a twist type mate, much better! was only 3 quid i think from my local welding shop, just a couple of flat head screws and a grub screw to change it

I was thinking about your's funnily enough. My local welding supplier may not stock them (didn't see them when I was there earlier in the week), so I may try to source one by mail order - I'm not in too much of a hurry.

mine is the same as the one Paul has linked to on ebay, holds the rod a lot firmer than the origional one

your local place is bound to stock them, possibly just not out on display? im sure even the good ones can end up becoming consumables, depending on how they are treated

Ian, most decent agri spares places stock them.

Mugs - your local welding supplier really should stock twist grips. The yellow 400A ones like TigPaul links are a standard bit of kit, and i'd expect to pay £3-4 for one (as opposed to £9 via ebay). You get similar in red, black etc, depending on the make.

The only problem with twist grips is they are not always handy for overhead welding, whereas most tongs do a number of positions. However, you can always bend the rod to suit the job.

Personally, I have no preference, only that the jaws will take a 1.6mm rod.

dont hink Mcluskeys will sell them if thats what you mean. mathasons (however you spell it) in galston is a proper welding supplier and air products dealer, they will definatly have one but you need to get to galston somehow

I use the king type first one I bought was for welding something where I could barely get
my old one intwo. I hate it at first but now I couldn't do without it

If they're a proper make, then they are industrial kit Ian. Weldequip will have them for a decent price. This is the kind of thing

i got a screwtype one and earth clamp from Weldequip lot better than the rubbish on my sip. A proper tong one i would try rather than being put off by cheap tat

I'll look into getting another Earth Clamp soon, funnily enough I was looking at replacing both at some point - that point was sooner that I'd hoped for...
