Nah. They need to be plain and smooth.
Think of the dog tag discs but smaller.

I sort of meant smooth as in no holes or protrusions like the suggested rivets, but I take your point. If you are using punchings they will need to spend a fair bit of time in a tumbler to get them smooth, half inch diameter isn’t something that you can fettle by hand.

Of course ... if you can find me some in steel or copper around 1/2"Is it not easier and cheaper to just buy them

I'd love one if I had the space.I know I keep banging on about it but a flypress with a half inch(non centred) punch is the perfect solution. Better than hitting things with hammers though you could use a flypress/arbor press to operate such a tool.
Why would you do that? Because a flypress is a fantastically versatile tool for all sorts of metalworking.

Well it's sort of the last place I would have thought to look, but I should have realised that Amazon sell everything these days.Search Amazon there are hundreds of options from 8mm up to 25mm
Agreed- and dare I say a big old fly press could probably live outside under a cover if space is an issue- suitably covered in oil or something and a tarpaulinThey look plasma cut to me. That ragged edge will drive you nuts if you try to smooth it.
Flypress will punch a perfect round in less than a second. Couple of dozen might take a couple of minutes with most of the time spent placing the material under the punch.
…ok I was trying to ease him in gently…Under cover, you say?

A bash with a hammer is fine.I bought a couple of Stakesy's hole punch sets. Quite happy, but the round 'off-cut' is a bit wavy. Would a quick bash with a hammer flatten it enough, or has the disc to be faultless?
Holy moly! Just looked at their website... Very different to when I bought my bits. And the prices!
