I’m rubbish at welding, have never tried TIG, dont even know why I want one, but need a TIG welder in my life

It will never be worked hard, good if it can do SS and alu, simpler and cheaper the better

Why don’t you have a go before buying one Parm? I’m sure loads of members would be happy to help, you’re welcome to come and have a play with my R-Tech, just don’t ask me for instruction (unless you need to know how to grind a tungsten, I’m an expert at that). My problem is I can’t just pick it up and do it, by the time I’ve got my eye in again I’ve ruined whatever it was I was trying to weld. If anyone asks me to Tig something for them I tell them no problem as long as they can give me three of them and are ok if two end up in the bin.

Stainless is *very* difficult. Alu is ok, takes a bit to learn. The ability to weld hard HSS edges onto stuff is bloody useful.

* I have zero desire or plans to try stainless again any time soon.

Huh. I found the opposite (certainly on my first time trying).

Aluminium I mostly blew holes through, all or nothing, either nothing happened or it just turned into a puddle. I've given up on anything below about 2mm.

Stainless OTOH I quite liked.

This was my *first* stainless attempt (no filler, fusion only). Lots of things wrong but successfully joined (unlike my aluminium efforts).
