I told our young design engineer that if he kept measuring in centimetres, I was going to have to get the metre rule... to slap him with each time he said it.
Well... Someone has to teach these kids

As for banana units.... no thanks. One inch or 1 thou is good as a term of reference, but for actually working with... nah.

I always use a metric/imperial tape and use whatever is the closest so I may cut a bit of steel 520mm X 31 1\4" . My mate who's around the same age does exactly the same so if we are working together we have no problems but everyone else thinks we are mad.

A few places have picked them up again, mostly for marketing/nostalgia value. Some of the over priced poncy traditional sweet shops for example will sell you a 1/4 of humbugs or whatever.

Imperial measurements are entrenched in most countries around the world, dont see many metric diameter wheels on vehicles, we still travel miles and boats/planes nautical miles, all steel industrial pipework here and the usa is imperial with bsp threads. It will be a very long time before everything is metric.

Remember the stir caused when the Michelin introduced the TRX rims and tyres? 315mm up to some other 'no relation to imperial' size. The idea fell flat on its 4rse as soon as the cars got a bit older and people didn't want to shell out for Michelin tyres. Merc and Ford used them IIRC.

Would that be mks or cgs variety sir?

My wife hails from mainland Europe and learned their version of 'Metric'. I've had great difficulty dealing with her centimetres, hectogrammes and other obscure 'Metric' units. Some are nearly as bad as the cousins' acre-feet unit of volume.

ETA: One of my French colleagues once quoted a dimension in pouce.
