Indexable Lathe tooling questions?

the only way round it is machine some of the inderside of the tool holder off to lower the height. but it leaves a lot of overhang so not worth the bother even if u get them for nothing

Used to think my 12x36 lathe (6x36 in UK terms) was a decent size until i started looking at tooling. "Small" is 1" tooling

Just went out to the shed, my S&B tool post has a 20mm space, I currently am using 3/8 tooling.

Will be changing my crosslide soon and hopefully I can retain my tool post, it even has a boring bar hole on there.

Here is a nice home made flycutter I saw, similar to what I will need to make:

If the lathe has 9" swing,then 16mm tools will be about your limit.
I used to run a CVA that size and a 0.050" shim under the tool used to bring it dead on centre.

Acquired some decent Kennametal Top Notch turning tools 18 years ago, these came 1" deep so slapped them in a 4 jaw turned them down and cut the ends off for the little Myford ML7.

The quick release tool holders are ok from China, did have a Dickson but no holders and didnt like the price.

Another Tip/Insert question.....

I have a face cutter that came with my Warco Major Mill, it is a MT3 x 32 and takes two inserts.

Ive measured the inserts and they seem to be 10mm lenth and 3mm thick triangle with no center hole, not sure on the pitch. Problem is all I can seem to find is 11mm lenth, is it me being stupid as usural, have I got a non standard size, or am I measuring wrong?

You did say they were Triangles didn't you?
No numbers written on them?
Milling inserts, the ones I have, have clearance, my triangles are P's which is 11º[I think]
Can you measure/guess the angle?

Ops did I miss that, missing loads at the moment as im suffering with toothache.

They are triangles with eather yg8 or vg8 markings on the back, doubt I could measure the angle.

Just trying to look them up now as im short on time to do things, not sure if Warco would tell me the size as they would probably like to keep all the buisness with them and I wont get hold of them till Monday.

If you measure the edge length you need to calculate the 'missing length cos[;-)] of the radius.
I just measured a TPUN 110304[TPU 221]. It has a height of 9.11 and if you calculate the triangle length using .4 as radius you get 10.98mm. I reread your post and you had said they were triangles.

Just had a measure with my trusty plastic vernier (battery dead in my digital, lol )

Ive got 10mm bottom edge, 9mm top edge, 3mm thick.

Not sure how much I will use this face cutter but would like some spare cutters just to try it out and put it through its paces.

Ive got lots of HSS home made cutters here I can still play with but with the index ones ill get what ever turns up to a point and make my own holders. So ill hunt ebay for some Round, Square, Triangle all around 10-12mm (100404) So that should be about £30 worth of hunting
