Insert to reduce the size of an M10 hole?

If strength is not an issue the rubber rawlplugs may do the job,there is a steel nut bonded into the rubber. M5 bolt with an 10mm od rubber threaded expansion plug.Just thoughts.

M6 rivnuts seem to be quoted as needing a drill hole of 9mm, however, this seller is quoting 8.5 -

Ive never used rivnuts before. Will they damage the extrusion?

Might i do better getting them, and sticking them in with epoxy resin (which wont be seen when the rivnut is in place)?

The smaller steel rivnuts dont take a lot of pressure to set so I dont expect it would damage the extrusion but the only way to be sure would be to try some. As Maker said you could get aluminium rivnuts which will be even easier on the extrusion though I have not tried them so can not say how durable the thread would be.

If you want to pre drill a small length of extrusion and post it to me I can put a M6 rivnut in and take pictures of the damange / not damage.

If it was slightly larger, on something mass produced like this, I'd expect to see a small piece of sprung steel with sharp corners, square, cut slight larger than the hole and with a hole in it to take a small self tapper.

Think that would probably be impractical here though unless you knew of "just the thing".

Rivnut seems the obvious option, provided the item isn't so small and delicate that the slight expansion will be a problem. Could always put Loctite in place then just don't go mad with setting it if in doubt.

Or make some from an m8 threaded rod? Either way a cheap solution is going to cost more in labour..

I don't think any riv-nut is going to work - they rely on a thin wall section to swell behind, not in.

I reckon, buy the time you've cut plates, cut threaded rod, supplied acorn nuts. . . or cut bar, threaded it, drilled and tapped it, loctited it in (have you seen the cost of a decent sized bottle of Loctite!!!) . . . or drilled and tapped some M10 socket set screws M4 up the middle and loctited 'em in . . . you could have saved £1.50 by buying a few hundred ensats . . .

Price the assembly at 60 quid . . . . or £70 with a quick order discount of a fiver . . . ;-)

Ive never used rivnuts, and, foolishly, had never even thought about them... But, of course, they are the same as rivets (which ive used plenty of!)

I watched a youtube vid, and now very much see what you mean!


I have just purchased some of the ones i linked to though, as, if theyre a tight fit before hand, some epoxy resin, and they will do the job.

I went with the threaded bar. I dont really like the dome cap nuts on the smaller case, but theyre ok on the larger.

They are M6. The M10 heads would have overlapped the edge on my earlier draft.

I got the rivnuts through the post, but, even though the seller said 8.5mm drill, the rivnuts are larger...

I may still open up to fit the rivnuts, and glue them in with epoxy resin, so as i can go back to standard bolt heads, rather than the dome ones, but at least i have something now...

the m6 threadded bar runs the whole length of the job, between the nut at one and and the nut at the other
its 'loose' in the extrusion, however, the ends are milled to 6.35 (which is tight with the wood)

Reading the other replies - if you find a rivnut that is a nice fit, Loctite retainer would lock them in well, rather than epoxy.
