Installation of my workshop extraction

Just thought I would share mmy step-by-step progress of installing my extraction in my little 'man cave'.

The 6inch outlet




My 6inch fan bought from evilbay for £30


Fan mounted


I bought a 6inch to 4inch 'Y' junction splitter for connecting my blast cabinet to the system. I plug/spot welded a couple brackets to mount it to the wall.

I made up some brackets and sprayed them black for mounting the 4inch gate to the wall. The gate is closed off when the blaster is not in use.


Simply glued the brackets onto the gate.

Not sure if such low volume use would create an issue, but where I have seen extraction used for blasting purposes, theres usually a horrible manky rust coloured stain all around in the vicinity of the outlet.
Obviously it builds up over time, chances are the odd half hour won''t cause it.

That wall is part of a block of garages which invade our garden. I retaliated by sticking a shed on the end of it

Maybe i should take it further and knock the wall through to extend my workshop.

I am not an extraction engineer by any means, but something I did learn while working with Rothmans/BAT technicians was that they used venturi for moving the tobacco around. This meant that the fan was always on the clean side drawing in fresh air. A good bit more faff but you will not be cleaning the fan out so often.

I experimented with a shop made one for GRP fumes. It worked extremely well. The relatively small amount of air going in draws substantially more of the fumes/dust out.

Initially when I saw your reply, although the principle is sound, I thought to myself 'I wish I had thought of that before. Now it means I gotta move things and rearrange etc, I might as well leave it as is and put up with cleaning the fan more often'.
Having thought about it though, It wont be hard graft to move the fan back to just behind the Y splitter and compare the difference in the extraction from the blast cabinet. I will definately try it out once I have completed the cabinet built. I am interested to note any difference.

Thats an excellent setup you have there Tiggy, Just wished my garden was big enough of a workshop at home, it'll save me a fortune in rent etc

Costwise was it a pretty reasonable expense? or was it more Heath & Safety, especially with Aluminium

I have being collecting all the parts gradually for the past month or so. I havn't even priced the whole thing up yet, so I have sat down for 15 minutes going over all the transactions adding up total cost so far.

Here goes: (prices include the shipping)

6" fan - £40 (I previously said £30 but didnt include the shipping)
6" to 4" Y junction £23
6" Ducting (5 metres) £22.04

4" Ducting (2 metres), 4" Flange, Outlet, 3 items came to £15.87

6" Gate £21
4" Gate £9.93

Total so far.........................£131.84

I am still yet to arrange some kind of funnel for the end of the fume extractor. whether I buy or make something for that, I havn't decided. A movable funnel? or permanent hood on the ceiling?

Its not quite finished, but perhaps call it £150-£160 for the whole setup.

The biggest reason for the extraction was for noise really. I need to consider the neighbours and feel the need to keep the door closed when doing a lot of grinding etc. I use a filtered mask but still have to stop and start to let the dust/fumes out as Its nice to be able to see what Im doing occasionally
Hooking the blast cabinet into the system was an afterthought as I was simply going to use a Henry for it. 2 birds one stone.

I have recently done some h&s training and have been advised that hoods are "out" and localized extraction (funnel) is the better way, as hoods will allow the fumes to travel past the face... whereas a moveable funnel can capture fumes where they are created. Anyway, I need an extraction system for my workshop so I am taking notes!!

This is great, I had no idea it could be done so cost effectively! Only problem I'd have is most of my work is done on the floor so it would be a pain having that ducting hanging about. I might have to just have it over my bench so that the dirty air has a way of escaping in the winter. Thanks!

Thanks, I shall take your advice and skip the hood idea. It makes more sense to be able to move the extraction to where its needed most at the time, plus installing a hood make more work for me

I expect your workshop is somewhat larger than my little cave, but you are welcome to come round anytime to view the extraction setup if you think it may help you get a feel for the size of extraction you may need for your workshop.

I plan to have a few hooks dotted around the ceiling giving me several points I can hang the funnel from, depending where Im working.

I have ordered an anemometer

I will use it to measure the air flow of the system as it is, then test it after moving the fan behind the Y junction and compare the difference.

Like the idea of such a system, but apart from covering the neighbours washing etc in dust, have you thought about the heat loss.
Can get cold even in the uk and extracting huge volumes of warm air could be expensive.
Is there a cheap mod so that you could capture the dust (external bin) and keep the heat.

that particular type fan hasnt to have any resistance in the line so the air flow cant be restricted

Don't know anything about extraction, but I guess that means there isn't a cheap solution. Seen cyclone type ideas to capture dust but that's sort of a closed system. No use for fumes though.

On one side I have a road with 'next to no' traffic or parked cars, on the other side I have a neighbour but my house is in between. From the ammount of blasting I expect to be doing (to start with at least), I havnt considered the extracted dust to being a big enough issue to warrant a filter. However, I guess I will be monitoring the system over time, so will make any necessary improvements if I need them.

It appears that filters may be available for the type of fan Im using. How effective they are, I wouldnt know. There would be some drop in the efficiency I would expect.

Brightspark, do you think the 6" duct going through a box, lets say for example 500x500x250 with a 500x500 filter screen, would be an efective way to reduce airflow resistace opposed to using an in-line duct filter If a filter system is needed? Just thinking the increased surface area will allow more air through.
