I'm pretty annoyed. I find it hard to see that they could both need main boards anyway - no actual damage to the boards, and surely it'll just be a couple of components.
I've OK'd the work for the 200phf model as it hurts but seems better than throwing it away. I might just stop eating for a month or two to pay for it...

Yep, the 'other one' ended up in use today. I'm quite pleased with it, it runs cellulose rods and maxed out was just right for the 3.2 rods I'm using, and I did a fair bit of welding with them without it overheating. Lovely machine for light work.
Hope it doesn't pack up though, looking at the prices charged for repairs I can't imagine it being economical should the worst happen.

I think I'll use it as the main machine as it is so handuy and keep the big one for when I'll never stop welding or want 4mm rods. Which I did today really, but at least I got the job done.

Thanks, I'll give them a call and see what they say and if they won't charge a fortune for plugging it in and saying 'it needs a new board' it might be worth a try!

I know someone who asked Thermal Arc to have a look at their dud welder lately and they wanted £220 plus vat .he didnt bother

Its a place where anything that cant be repaired is repaired. They repair all kinds of electronic components. Let us know how you come on.

Mines older than that again, I think - but like you, mine's fine just now.

It's the ac/dc version, too - so I'd guess the boards would be quite pricey, too.
Never enquired about it - and hope never to need to!

These days a lot of electronics manufacturers only do, and recommend their agents do, board swaps - not tracking down and repairing components on the boards. It's easier and less messy for them. That is when they've designed the unit with the idea that when it breaks, it might occur to anyone to repair it rather than buy a new one. It's a different scene to the days of black and white valve TVs.

There are a few independent repairers who are able to pitch in and replace components in welders rather than swap boards. One of them is Welderfix in Harrogate. Someone from the company is a member on here, but I haven't seen him for a time. You could find them using Google. There are many others.

Well, until about a fortnight ago I could have said 'I've a 5 year old 200phf which is going well'.
There was no warning prior to the failure, it simply died.

Ha no, but I did get mine off eBay for a not insignificant sum (i.e it wasn't a 99p bargain of the decade due to everybody else missing it).
