Assuming that there's any validity to measuring the resistance while the pot is in the circuit, then it would appear to be toast. The resistance goes up and then back down as I rotate the knob from left to right. It's quite erratic.

You should be able to order this from Walsh, but will be a week or so delivery as probably not a stock item as the machine was superseded some time ago, but still hundreds of them still around and working!

Its probably 10k pot but it will be marked on it.
even though the pot is screwed you can still measure the max resitance from (?) The outer 2 pins.trial and error it,it will be obvios
It is constant regardless of the pot position.it mightnt read correct in position so desolder it first

Had not thought of that... Will try, probably going to disassemble the pot & clean it to see if it's just grinding dust shorting it.

I took the pot off the board.
The pot is marked as 10K I measured 7.8 k across it.
As I turned the pot the resistance went up and down smoothly.
I guess it's not the pot. Now I just have to put it back on.

Ok, so I put it all back together, and it works.
5 amps sparks a bit but won't run an arc
100 amps runs a nice arc with a 3mm 6013
All seems well.
I know I checked several times when it was causing problems, so I suspect
a) Metal Dust might have been the problem, with the taking apart, and cleaning, the problem was fixed, and I simply jumped to the conclusion it was the pot as the reading were odd while it was in circuit.
b) The knob on the pot might not have been turning the potentiometer, and now it's been reassembled a few times, it's turning properly (don't really think this was it)
c) a solder joint on the pot had given up the ghost, and I fixed it by taking it apart and resoldering it (unlikely, the joints looked well soldered)
Incidently the pot is pretty well sealed, so I don't think there's any dust got it there.
Anyhow my Pico140 is now back doing what it does best. I'm not too worried about the 7.8k reading across terminals 1 & 3 when the pot should be 10k. Perhaps I'm loosing a bit of the top or bottom end of the range, I don't need > 120 amps every often nor less than 35amps.

I guess if anyone wonders about the longevity of an inverter, a decent quality one will survive 18 years, and several knocks which were enough to dent the casing, and it will keep on welding.
