Is anyone keeping chickens in their sub-urban terraced garden? There's a few houses around here doing it and my wife has been excited about doing the same.
We've got a few spare square metres at the side of the garden. What would you do for the ground within the enclosure? Something that's nice for the chickens and won't turn to mud would be nice

I think at one stage we had 30. I lost count. They are very free range, in fact damn near feral and range over the paddocks surrounding the house. In one case, they went to the neighbour’s place across the road, 250m away and pecked on their door… They ignore their nesting boxes and fly into the trees overnight.
Every day is Easter, finding where they have laid their eggs. Occasionally, we get chicks, although the 3 hawks we have over the farm trim the numbers.
Despite the number of chickens, I see the missus had to buy 2 doz eggs for the makings of Christmas eve potato salad.
They are kind of neat if you have the space for them to roam. Don’t underestimate the amount of poop a chicken can produce, so start with a couple.
