Is it ok to mount a plug socket upside down?

I am just about to mount a double socket in the cupboard and it would make sense to fit it upside down as the leads are coming in from above.

Do the regs say anything about this?

The power will run out of the earth hole if you do that!
I have seen plenty upsidedown and can't think of a reg that says you can't do that.
Can you not move it up a bit?

I could move it up a few inches for clearance at the bottom, but it just seemed to make sense to keep the flexes tidy.

I'll fit it a few inches up and if building control complain I'll just spin it round for the inspection.

If the plug isn't factory fitted, and being under the sink, if any water should get on the lead, it will get into the plug.

Our house 1970's build, only recently had RCDs put in. I Imagine a large percentage of houses were built before RCD's became standard.

We had a leak with the washing machine plug being right under, got soaked.
Also some *********s ran the copper pipes infront of the plug so it was extremely difficult to insert/remove! Just enough clearance with a bit of bending.

I should think the only issue would be the plug working its way out as the weight is on the top rather than hanging down, on sink cupboards I always silicone all the joints as you will have a leak at some point!

If water runs along the lead, then, when mounted the right way up, it will not run to the plug/socket.

When mounted in reverse, there is no low point for the water to drip from before it gets to the sparky stuff.


I think that would be the only consideration?

I'd be inclined to fit it the correct way up, that way you've got a drip loop should any water track along the cable.

Would that be the course that tells you it's ok to work in a puddle of water around an electrical outlet?

Same course that says leaks under sinks are "uncommon"?
