If you had your 10 year inspection this would have been rectified or atleast noted.

How many houses have a full electrical inspection including under the sink every 10 years? Very few I imagine. Dont think ours has had one expect for work being done.
New storage heaters about 1993 did not require RCD's even though he added a new CU for it.

Afaik RCD's are only required recently if work is being done. When we had heaters fitted 2018/2019, they only put a wall mount RCD for the bathroom heater but not the others.

A good percentage of houses have no RCD protection, aging plumbing, and sockets under the sink.

I've heard from a few people local to me that they needed gas and electrical inspections when they generously threw open their homes to Ukrainian refugees. And it came out of their own pocket.

What if their home didn't pass? Mrs Ukraine and her kids would have to wait for another house to be offered, as I doubt many people are going to do a rewire just to help someone out.

Round here, it is estimated that about 20% of properties are still on rewireable fuses (BS 3036). So no RCD.

As to the above, unfortunately, you have a duty of care, therefore yes, you would need to comply with BS7671.

I would add that most people who are/would welcome Ukrainian refuges, are the sort to get the work done.

When doing this you're supposed to use Australian specification plugs and sockets as they're designed to be mounted upside down

It looks ****e I agree, but so many modern appliances are so deep that socket in a cupboard is best.


Personally I would opt to not be in a sink cupboard.

If I am in a sink cupboard I put it high up in the cupboard, about mid way and the correct way up.


In this case looks like turning back isn't and option, I would be more frustrated by it now consuming cupboard space.


I certainly wouldn't be worried about immediate death, that's more likely to come from driving or crossing the road.

no different to having them under heating boilers or water heaters or controls in the airing cupboard

I might be totally wrong here, but personally I would have placed the socket behind the appliance or behind an accessible unit. I wouldn't have bothered hacking into an adjacent unit.

Depth of alot of appliances stops this or the minuter length of cable makes pulling it out impossible.

If it’s for an inbuilt dishwasher or something then you wouldn’t put it behind it as you wouldn’t be able to easily isolate it without first removing the whole thing

sockets arent suposed to be behind apliances unless they have isolator switches above that are accessible. take washing machines that develop a fault and your rcd trips half the wiring then it needs to be unplugged and pulled out before you can get the supply back on

I don't doubt you, but when I say I would have, I mean that's what I've done in the past...past being a few weeks ago....yes agreed no good if the flex is less than 700mm

Not so much for a washing machine which can be pulled out fairly easily but not for something built in!

yes it is when you get called out at 2 am in the morning on callouts and have to pull half the appliances out to unplug them and find the fault its plain bad practice, still as long as your happy with it good luck
