Mild steel is useless unless the arbor's about to fall out. they need to be hardened and a very close fit. Also they should be used in pairs so that you have a parallel separating force.

In fact I need to fit a MT3 to one of my chucks. Here's the result.

That may have been true when you bought yours, but I do not think they now carry them. Last time I looked they were on the website but out of stock. I just looked now and cannot find them at all. Please supply a link.

They do seem difficult to get hold of. If someone really wanted some, try Rotagrip or MSC (they are shown on the US MSC site, but not sure about UK one).

OK. Found them at UK MSC for average £7.30 plus VAT a pair, but not a stock item. Stock codes JDC-13266H, 13267C and 13268M.

There is a drawing of one here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Drill-Chuck-Removal-Wedge-Various/dp/B07XV22CBY and by comparing the size of the slot to the large end of the JT6 taper it is designed to be used on, you could infer the dimensions for the other size wedges.

Interestingly, 13266, 67, 68 and 69 are original Jacobs part numbers for them.

I wonder if a piece of old leaf spring would be good to make them from. Would unhardened gauge plate work? Maybe an old bolster chisel. What other common household item would be made of sufficiently tough stuff for their purpose?

I have seen a 1/4" hole drilled through the adapter across the long axis and a dowel put in making a solid spot for a big tapered wedge to press against.

I typically apply a little heat to the chuck, this is Arbor removal not open hurt surgery.

Ive also heated when replacing the arbor they stay on well enough after that

I had one that would not come apart. I finished up chopping off the arbour close to the chuck & boring out most of the remains in the lathe. Once I did that I punched the rest out from inside the chuck.

The wedges were good for removing tool holders from machines, without needing to hammer on the end of the drawbar. - not so special for removing arbors from drill chucks. They are easy enough to make, btw (I have made a couple of sets, of different thicknesses).

I borrowed a grease gun today and it wouldn't budge, grease just came past the grease gun jaws into the chuck.
So a bit of a quick clean, back into the lathe and bored a 12mm hole in it for a bigger punch. Out to the anvil and it took some serious smacking with a BFH for it to eventually pop out.
Not sure what the heck has been going on with it, someone has obviously been trying to do something but what I have no idea.

The taper seems fine lower down so I should be fine, I only want it for holding 20mm dia centre drills that I have a few of but have been unable to use until I found this chuck.

I think the bigger one I had was the worst to get off but it gave in eventually.

Me too. Doesn't really make a difference if you're taking off a knackered arbor but if you want to reuse it, you're less likely to bend it with an opposed pair of wedges.


Will a grease gun really provide more force than a sharp hammer strike?

I have been struggling with the removal of chucks and also looked for some wedges online. Could not find anything apart from MSC or some very expensive options. I could make some but time is precious and I would much rather mess around with other things. As the wedges need to be hardened too, it is just better to order some in my opinion.

Decided to order all three sets on MSC today (backorder). Hopefully, they arrive.
