Julian calendar ... Help

I had never seen or heard of a particular calendar layout being described as Julian before. I was only familiar with the change from Julian to Gregorian.

So I Googled it again and found this alternative usage of the term Julian. Most bewildering terminology and I see no link to the actual Julian calendar. I didn't realize that the use of sequential numbering of the days of the year even had a special name!

That’s the one I know as Julian. The police use that one - ie each day has a number - for various things.

The example in the early posts of this thread isn’t Julian it’s just a wall planner type which will suit Daphhs needs. I was waiting for one of our resident pedants to point it out but I was disappointed

Gardening does not run to calendars very well as it a 24/7 x 365 thing but seed sowing , transplanting and harvesting start & end do.

It's easy for me , I just want weeks showing Sunday in easy on the eye & addled brain to find & read them in columns , as I fill in my seed sowing planner
in weekly slots , in one three to four hour session at a comfortable desk in the dry & warmth of our kitchen .

Doing it for the whole year as well as planning all successional sowings bi or tri weekly once the sowing seasons gets under way .
I've been doing it for 35 years , this way I usually avoid unwanted gluts of crops .

Having a cumulative week number is also very handy when thinking of weeks to germinate , transplant , to harvest . marking such events on the planner is also very helpful for the three or so hours it takes to put the info onthe planner it's well worth the time I save because of the planner being easy to read at a glance for both flowers & veg gardens .

Why not drop the calendar altogether and get nature to tell you when to plant, prune and harvest? There is a science or tradition called Phrenology which uses observations of particular plant cycles to time when to do things in the garden. Traditionally a lilac tree was grown in the garden and when the leaf buds came it indicated, for instance, time to plant the peas; when the flower buds began to open it was time to address the aphid problem, etc. This way you are in sync with the microclimate in your particular garden and also right on time if there is an early or late season.

I'd come across the use of Julian to mean "numbered days" but I don't know why it has the same name as the old Julian calendar. I've no idea why having a calendar with week numbers included and Sunday in the wrong place would be considered Julian.

When Sainsburys dropped best-before-dates and replaced them with a code (so the staff knew when to discount / remove stock), it only took me a couple of weeks to realise that the code was just the "Julian date" in the sense that it was a number corresponding to the day of the year. They've since changed to a code that appears to be a simpler date (without delimiters), so I guess the Julian date was too confusing for the staff!

I’ve got a (untested and probably will never know) theory that the calculator card reader things for online banking work on the day of the year number.

Except that this year we have had exceptional rain. Whatever your plans they need to correspond with Nature's plans and Nature seems to change her plans from year to year. Phrenology is an attempt to syncronise plans to Nature's varying timetable.

Due to the " heavy dampness " here in South Wales UK I have to plant & sow in wet weather .... or else I'd never be able to grow anything . Sod having to wait for the moons cycles or religion inspired events .

As a consequence I start off a lot of our stuff in our office/ log cabin in a heated UV growing bed or in the heated propagation bench in my glasshouse in bottomless tube pots, then transplant out when it is several inches tall & able to take on the wet weather more easily as the ambient outside temp reaches 12 oC.

This is why the Julian calendar is soo good for my needs . All seeds I self produce or grow out of packets have known days to germination as a set temp & so many day to a harvestable crop .

With planning like that we have a steady supply of home grown garden fresh produce for most of the year .

Quite possibly, I just stick stuff in the ground and hope. Jean, my former neighbour used to lean on the wall and ridicule me for my english ways. Fortunately he spoke such a thick patois I didn’t understand most of his insults!

My mother had a rather hippy gardener when she got too old to do it herself. He was into biodynamics, my mother would say “can you plant these beans/cabbages today please” “oh no the moon is in the wrong phase, suns shining on Uranus” or some other excuse. The trouble was, by the time the phases lined up the seedlings had died. She always said though, what he did plant did well. I understand the French are into biodynamics in quite a big way.
