sorry - just realised that came across a bit "snippy".
i got up at 6am, walked 6 miles into the city centre, spent 3 hours on a coach, then a 5 hour drive back (caught in traffic on m62). THEN a 4 mile walk with the dog.

the opposite end of the pipe is embedded in the plaster of the opposite wall, and is attached with something with the tenacity of sikaflex (or MIL's "cooking")

Just cut half the pipe out and brick up then. Fill the remaining pipe with concrete
