Hi, just signed up as am sort of doing a car resto. (Bmw e30)
Have got some welding experience mostly mig, open to ideas as have dreaded rear wheel arches to sort (inner outer and patches too)

Where should I post for assistance of getting a generator to run my mig (clarke pro 90) in a lock up with no power? !

Welcome, you will need a decent size generator to run a MIG probably 2~3 times the power requirement of the welder to handle the inrush current, the Chinese machines are very 'optimistic' on there power output. An AVR controlled set is probably a good idea but not so critical on an old transformer welder.

Depending on your location a generator may make you unpopular - they are noisy!

80A x 3 would run the whole street! And weigh about 2 ton!

There should be a data plate on the back of the machine with a power input in kva or amps on it.

Cool , I'll have a look , seriously need to get this car sorted, 100x the work i thought it needed...

Have seen some generators that may be upto the job... I'll recheck the specs first...

Just be warned - the Chinese generators don't like hard work! A second hand decent make will be a better bet and easier to sell on.

Cars are always a lot nastier than than they first look, my Landrover is more rust than chassis

I would be looking for around 4kVA, welders are very hard on generators. With the far eastern generators it's pot luck on lifespan, I have got a 2.8kVA alternator from a dead one laying on the shelf, the quality of the dope on the winding is poor, the winding on the rotor is slack - over time I suspect that the winding would fail because of this, I'm going to re dope it before I fit it, however if I had bought it as a running generator.......

I bought a Pramac gennie for £140 off the bay recently, 2.9kva with Honda G160 engine in almost new condition.

Well done, I am really chuffed with mine, I don't even bother taking it out the van now, even when I run it I just point the exhaust out the open doors.
