I have used a tormek wet sharpening stone it gave good results but was painfully slow. Better to rough out first then use it to finish shape

Another trick i seen is to cover the part, in this case blade with a slurry of chalk before heating it. It stops scale forming.

That looks functional, choil and jimping are something my shed knives don't usually get 
one that I have been working on, old rasp into a bowie, spoke with @hotponyshoes for the details on the materials, annealed it, cut the shape , added spine detail, next to grind , re temper, harden then I have some antler for scales .... this is my first attempt BTW at the whole process a lot to learn yet!
Thank you! I was mega pleased for a first attempt ! I have one of those ebay 4" wide bench belt grinders, was thinking i need to make a bevel jig but not sure? @h-dom how are you doing your grinding you have some awesome bevels on yours!

Does look good, being pedantic you harden then temper.
Ah my bad sorry got my terminology the wrong way round yeah forge - oil quench then yes oven x2 !

I started a new one yesterday. Bushcraft clone for a friend's son who is in Scouts.
I have altered the handle slightly to allow for hands smaller than mine. It also exaggerates the effect of the guard. Template will be cut out and scribed onto the 30 X 4mm O1 tools steel.
I then spent a couple of happy hours with a hacksaw and files. I usually go for 8mm pins. As the tang is slightly narrower than usual, I have drilled two 6mm pin holes and kept the lanyard hole at 8mm. That scribe line was too enthusiastic! Going to be a swine to sand off!
Today I will start to file the bevels in. This takes a VERY long time!

Right.....we used to use nylatron....Ive got some round slabs that i use under the caravan.

I made a strop from an unwanted leather welders apron i was given years ago. Made it by gluing the leather to a piece of wood about 12" long by 4" wide, rough side out. Works well, but i need to get some chromium oxide or diamond spray for it. Dovo sell strops but at over 80 quid they are too expensive.
