Just out of curiosity, as an inspection engineer inspecting welding in the context of ASME 9 procedures, what are your welding qualifications and experience?

wow... loving the contempt on here lol, but i get and its a shame you have this veiw of inspectors who you grant not worthy, as 9/10, i actually just ask the welder if he is happy with the set up. sure i have to check and take pics to send to the client in the report but i consider myself fair.

....no due to health issues i couldn't physically weld.

and YES i have courses on how to test somebody else's work.... as well as on many things, the welding side is the one used the least.
if you take the chip of your shoulder, you might understand why!

you obviously feel an inspector should have the ability to actually weld? yes? ..... so have you got your inspection tickets? if not why? too hard or just not like the extra money?

well on a visual, we will both see the same faults most likely esp on dpi and mpi.. but unless your a NDT qual or cswip3.1 too your opinion on them means sweet FA
the rad graphs or the UT set would most likley confuse you if you dont hold them tickets

---- now the the real reason your 'snarkey ' comment about me not being able weld but can judge your welds, goes past a simple visual. now as you say i have no welding experience (ie doing it) BUT and a BIG but i get paid because i can take the information of that weld, and the info of what the function of the vessel is, what is in the vessel, then calculate the the static head pressure (depends on product but lets say water at @433psi ) the height at which the vessel is at and decide what pressure the vessel can safley operate....or if the operating pressure is too low i can then work out how much re-enforcement would be needed.

ican also use it to check how thick the walls need to be , max allowable working pressure, fitness for service...remaining life issues than may occur.

Ok, so in a nutshell , you have no welding experience, but you have done the courses on how test somebody else’s work…

Looking at it. Is Global Producer 2 an old FPSO, or was it the semi Northern Producer renamed!

I asked very valid questions. At no point did I make it personal. This forum can be a veritable goldmine or it can be the Sahara desert. It depends on one thing, you. Its getting a bit hot in here….

I will leave you with a point to ponder though. What kind of reception did you think you were going to receive when you come onto a welding forum asking questions that, quite frankly , as the big highly qualified welding inspector, you really shouldn’t be asking ?

I can work all that out but I had guys to do it for me! I remember that old rust heap at Mcnultys yard, was offered a job on it, but didnt bother…..

was in a yard with old inspector when a millitary jet flew over realy low , i said i could see the undercarriage , he quipped i could see the undercut
A friend wno had just came out of uni and did the ut 39 node quals apparantly very hard ! was on the floor marking up uc and sp on some subsea steelwork so at xmas time we got a large box of chalk and wrapped it in xmas paper
from the welders
an mpi guy was doing his thing but the switch on his gear wasnt working so he had to haul it off briskly , meanwhile a nosey sparky had been peering over his shoulder and the magnet hit him hard on the nose breaking it next day there was a poster of a comada mpi tech in the first aid room mpi testing the sparks nose confirming a crack
how about the hess inspector with the camel coat and his entourage trying to measure the depth of an rtj groove had to show him that the bit that sticks out the end of the caliper is actualy a depth gauge

they tell me the visual weld samples are mostly plastic now on the cswip
course
sounds like you are almost a welding engineer , most welders can interperit graphs if they are involved with repair work the acceptance criterion will vary of course . No need to be bogged down with paperwork and calcs

iv waited a few days to reply as i know im a bit of a hot head.... but i appreciate your comment, thank you!
im not going to speak to people directly if i can generalise but some parts of my reply will be obv aimed at certain ppl... im not trying to cause an argument, figure a generalised reply may be best and hopefully be abled to integrate into this site as any depot of info and knowledge is good to have.

so from the beginning.
1) i apologies if i mis interpret tone and replies on here, its somthing i struggle with as im on the autism spectrum! (i try to not mention this, but at times i need to , to so or i find it hard to know if ppl are trying to act clever, take the mickey or genuinely ask a question (it sucks at times, as i come across aggressive, which im not really, just my brain tells me what to do . That said its also a benefit as although im not wired the same as others it means i find other things like math very easy, to calculate in my head...(but spectrum or not im just **** poor at english, lol)

2) i know one guy asked something along the lines of ''what did i expect asking a question i should know the awnser to?'' - AGAIN.... this is my fault, due to the way i asked my question ..... BUT if im honest i expected a basic '' you have the wrong end of the stick'' and i did try ask it in a manner that was basic.... Unfortunatley readers have had to deal with my poor...very poor...writing.
Some replies i honestly felt were just trying to make out like ''becasuse i cant weld, i cant possibly know more than a welder'' , and im sure a few were mocked me with memes (again i do struggle with things.....esp when its type and not in a convo where i cant here tone)

3) also, the replies which were given and assumed correct were not actually correct (although in theory were), which again got my back up as (my) pride becomes a fall. The whole point of what i was asked (NOT WHAT I ASKED/PORTRAYED) was not to distinguish what it meant BUT rather for myself to realise that the 400# are part of the DATA section and only to be used when refered by a previous section..... so the replies which where correct in one way were not in the actuall awnser.......again my fault due to my explaination.......i just didnt think ppl would be dicks and try 'catcch you out''.......< again sorry im sure they didnt mean too try embarrass >

if im not your type of person to be on the site thats sound, but know i was not blagging my role but rather im getting to the point of having these things memorised!

You have had some time to have a think, my limited experience on this forum is 99% positive, as with all forums there are some (not saying any on your thread were out to catch you out) who look for the negatives,

The way I read your question made me thing you were not up to speed on the welding process's you were describing, I gave a quick reply to see if it would help you out, I dont think it did?, I have come from being a welder in the oil and nuclear industries, to a move into weld inspection also in the nuclear sector.

I would say its time to move on, forget about this thread, you got the answer you needed out with the forum. This forum is huge with what seems a great depth knowledge which I enjoy reading up on people personal take on various issues, I dont comment very often but hope to have some positive input when I do.

You have a great deal of knowledge to share get involved and enjoy it if you want to.
