Landrover towing Austin A30 on trailer accident this morning on M5

I Passed this RTC on the M5 around 07:00 this morning whilst heading Northbound.

Offside front of the Landrover looked very damaged, probably had hit central reservation.
The Austin was being towed on a trailer, which was detached from the Landrover when I passed.
The owners probably not going to be happy, but sounds like nobody was seriously hurt.

I hate to be the one straight on the offensive but I wonder how have they crashed on a straight section of motorway? Vehicle issue? Avoidance of a hazard? Incorrectly loaded trailer? Driver error / falling asleep? Speed? Lack of training?

The vehicle on the trailer can’t have been attached too well for it to come adrift unless something has failed… I thought the guidance had been updated but it seems the minimum requirements is two straps placed on wheels diagonally opposite and either a chock or extra strap on a third wheel. I normally do one on each corner just to be safe. Last thing you want is a rear end shunt from the load having just crashed head on into something because it’s not secured properly…

There seem to be a lot of car transporter trailers around with the wheel right under the bed. I am sure the wheels outside the load are more stable.
Looks like the car might have been on backwards so perhaps the weight distribution was tail heavy.

I had a double blow out on my 16ft Ifor with a range rover classic hybrid thing on the back while towing with my 110. The 110 kind of shrugged and dragged the trailer to the next layby. I was surprised at how stable it was when the blow out happened. I am not sure what caused it in my case - everything is well maintained. I wonder what went wrong to cause the accident above as it looks like quite a mess given the detachment of the trailer and the vehicle on the trailer. Maybe i was just lucky!

Fishtailing is nearly always caused by not enough downforce on the hitch.

The van is the 6th best A35 in the world and is now bent

Will need a reshell as it’s badly bent

Yep, could have gone through the central reservation

Apparently the chassis is dead on the Landy too

Cant see the remains of many straps, makes you wonder how well that little car was strapped to the trailer?

Looks to be sat pretty level to me and you can see the right front wheel, which doesn't look flat.

I've always loaded cars engine forward and strapped all four wheels down, if you only strap 2 opposite wheels they always start bouncing around across the axis of the 2 untied wheels

Can you see a different picture ? I can only see the near side wheels on the Land Rover, and ok they do look ok

Looks like it’s a RHD and we are looking at the left side?

Zoom in on the landy and there’s no steering wheel. Traffic car is also facing the ‘right’ way. Oncoming truck on other carriageway gives it away too?
