Some more updates, 5 years after I started

Motor mount 3d printed, and fitted

It moves the carriage:

This test lies a bit, I get some flex in the lead screw mount (I think), so sometimes it's up to 0.10mm short on the return.


I've ordered a raspberry pi touch screen, and will write some software to control the Arduino from the raspberry pi instead of having actual buttons controlled by the Arduino.

Once the concept is proven, I will remake the pulley on the stepper, and the motor mount. The pulley isn't running true at the moment.

How do you pick up the spindle position. Some sort of sensor on the spindle?

on a normal lathe you’d have a TDI or keep your half nuts engaged.

on this the spindle would free to rotate, independent of the electronic lead screw.

Mine is completely homebrew, including the software etc

I already have the rpm counter and hall sensor bit working in another project of mine, but I need to move some code around to get it to work for this as well.

Tbh I don't know how well just one pulse per rev will work with the lack of rigidity and power on the little atlas, but time will tell

Well, I've enjoyed this read. Fascinating. Loving the idea tbh.

I've a really old lathe that I'm tempted to play around doing this sort of thing when I've eventually finished getting it back up to working.
