does the reversing switch not reverse motor direction?

Yes it does, but looking at the mechanics of it I cannot see why it does. Throwing the switch from one way to the other seems to connect the same 3 wires exactly the same, unless there are hidden workings I can’t work out.

Magic works in mysterious ways It's all to do with the way the contacts are arranged for the pins in the rotating "drum".
