Should I just stick to a standard torch on Ali?

Stick with a standard torch unless your parts are very small the heatsink effect will be noticeable.
There was a new member who joined earlier this year that was also gas welding aluminum. I he was looking for blue shade goggles from memory, might be worth a search for you.
Good luck i used to enjoy gas welding ali although i haven't done any for years, keep a close eye on the pool as the difference between it getting a little too big and hitting the floor are very narrow.

Thanks guys - looks like the standard torch just like the "old timers " used on Ali is still the way.

The new murex stuff is crap. At work all the old gear was upgraded recently, and the new stuffs not a patch on what we had, hard to adjust and poor fit and finish even down to the spark igniter its all sh**te. I'm glad i still have my old murex gear at home.

A Harris 19-6 is small, light, comfortable and capable of welding (or cutting) stuff much thicker than most people would ever need. Should be available from pretty much any decent welding supplier in the known universe and not particuarly spendy; a little more than a Murex ESAB DH3 or model O but probably a chunk cheaper than 'boutique' things like a Meco Midget or the heavy ol' DHC Dillan Henrob Cobra thing
