If you're going to be lead bashing in-house and, lead burning in-house too. Use TIG, DC e-, about 15 amp, 1mm tungsten. Same preparation required, except a wire brush is ok for removing oxides.

I used TIG and a turbo torch, TIG was OK but had to be very clean; the oxide forms on lead in front of your eyes.
I found using the turbo torch a SS brush, lead free solder and flux. Does the job very well

 , heat goes to work oxides lifted) also small nozzle using shield gas as sort of jet like flame force. This was on a workbench indoors with backing but with good results. On a roof in situ soft solder sticks underpinned where necessary / possible with sheet copper. Worked for me anyway.
