Cheers guys.
it is always a massive relief when this kind of thing is well received.
Putting it together was a bit nerve wracking, I was dreading cross threading one of the bolts in the captive nuts, they are inside the structure and difficult to access. but it took me ten minutes to pop it together.
Chunkolini, can i ask how you approach an idea you have,Do you spend time thinking about things or put things down on paper or just start fabricating to see how things would look ?
On the few things ive done i tend to mull things over for a while, the osprey took a few days of thinking about before i was happy to start.Mainly things i might have problems with and try to sort them out in my head before they actually happen.
Just wondering what your train of thought was.
How do I do the design stuff?
This one was odd, she rang me up to ask if I could do it and it popped into my head almost fully formed, the basic structure for the body was complete. I suggested what I would like to do in the first phone call and she agreed with me. Fantastic. I realised that with hubby being a composer she is used to dealing with 'creatives' a bit like dealing with small children.
I knew I needed key board and legs, they got done when i came to them.
It sounds odd, but I love working like this. I'm sure if I had drawn up plans etc they would have got ignored and I would lose the flow of making it.
I was very lucky with this customer, she trusted me to get on with it, there were no drawings or plans. I always send photos of each stage to check people are happy and it can evolve as we go.
Getting a price is the hardest bit, but at last I seem to have cracked that one. I figured about three weeks and allowed for four, I have just looked and it was just over three weeks, but I did a bunch of other stuff at the same time. I used to suffer badly from going over time when I first got started.
More normally I have an idea floating around and pick at it, sometimes for years than one day it attacks me and just wont go away. I have what is almost a design box in my head, I open it up and pull things out, then put them back until next time. A bit like Hannibal Lecter with his memory palace. In fact just like that. The best time for thinking about it is when cycling, I must look a right idiot, cycling along babbling on to myself and flicking my forehead with my left index finger when a good idea comes in. or worst of all sat in the pub staring into space watching my fingers as I wriggle them about. Or tell somebody to leave me alone as I am busy.
It goes with the job.
Note, I have never discussed any of the above before.
Thinking in three dimensions, I always thought everybody can do this, but apparently not. That does seem odd to me.
There was an interview with a composer a while back on the radio and he described how a tune just pops into his head fully formed. Yep I thought.
Then some art critic ridiculed him in the paper the next day saying that cant be possible. I always regret not writing in and ridiculing him.
Hmm, going on a bit here.
Strada you have a very similar approach. It is great when your tower tumbles down in your head because some idiot has missed a piece out. Much better then finding out half way through.
A wonderful quote from Thomas Harris, author of the Lecter books.
Clarice Starling says
"Problem-solving is hunting; it is savage pleasure and we are born to it."
A wonderful even beautiful statement. That stung me like a wasp, I dont 'do' literary quotes, but that one made so much sense.
Thanks for that reply,i really do appreciate it
I think i know about your design box, mine is just a very small one and i will only have one thing at a time in it ,then when its done i will put something else in it and let it muster for a while
I must admit i had a few restless nights doing the osprey,i just wanted it to look right.I did it for myself, to see if i could. If that makes any sense.
If i was doing it for a customer i wouldnt have slept for a week
I could improve it a bit, just little niggles ,but it is what it is.
I did a painting about 2 years ago of vermeers girl with the pearl earing, but instead of using vermeers girl i decided to use my daughter, that also could be improved quite a bit,My wife loves it and has told me to leave it be.
I guess what im trying to say ( apart from rambling )is ,im never really 100% happy on something i finish, but i think thats normal
Thanks again chunkolini for sharing
Once again Chunklini you have produced something that I would be happy to have.
Art Deco has been mentioned but I feel the flow of Nouveau is more present.
My big plastic one, piano that is, pales into insignificance.
Your thought process is an interesting read. My background means I have to try and ensure I know exactly how to do a piece/part/project before I start, but the way you can think as you go is quite alien to me.
