Lifting engines off a girder or RSJ?

If the two beams running the length of the garage were lower the traversing beam could trolley back and forth on the top of the beams. You might need to make a custom trolley for each side but its an option.

^^ I'd sooner have the traversing beam on top of the longitudinal beam(s) anyway, then the force between the two beams will be in compression rather than tension.

I'd like to do the same here, I also have the problem of liw ceiling height. I had thought of running the cross beam within the channel. I could do with someone to do the calcs

If the two beams are separated more than the width of the car then they won't interfere with space used for jacking up the car, so to me they are using headroom that I wouldn't use anyway. But I'd rather only have one beam as it makes my roof design simpler.

You could fit a load leveller to the beam trolley then hang the winch from that.

Years ago, i used to use a movable gantry. Basically rsj goal posts, with feet, home made bearing castors. Pull it out, over the back end of the power boat. Lift engine off. Worked great, used to store against back wall, with my bike in the middle.
It went with the house mid divorce...as did the boats

I visited a guy in Sennybridge and he had done a similar thing where he had U channel running along each side of his workshop with the I beam running in the channel so he didn't lose any height, liked it so much I'm copying what he did in my garage

I done a set up like that for a guy who scraps cars. he is thrilled with it. I got the trolleys off hoist UK . don't have pics on this phone but i'll search for them later

Depending how high your RSJ ridge is, you can make some sideways adjustment just by lines attached to the hook. If I was using it on a regular basis, I might use two beams about 50cms apart for a smaller version of your no. 2 drawing. That would be enough for any engine positioning.

Get some skates for the car, they you can just move the car from side to side a little as needed
