The company I work for do rewinds and new replacement transformers for welding machines. It is usually cheaper to supply a new transformer with voltage switch than to rewind the original transformer due to the amount of time envolved in detailing it. A new replacement transformer with 6 position voltage switch would be approx £249.00 + vat. You would have to drill a few new mounting holes but it is fairly straight forward to fit. Hi noticed on the top layer of both the burnt ones there is a wire coming out in the middle then it stars again to the end[ not explained well]Ill have to take a pic to explain.It wouldnt have been as bad if the were all seperate than i could have done one at a time.Out of all the places i phoned up and emailed pics for a repair quote only the one replied .The welding supply places just tried to sell me a new machine when i asked them about repairing it.

Wayne the wire going out and then back is one of the taps/loops. Basicly as you wind you reach a tap point then having secured the winding sofar (to stop it unwinding!) you take the wire out with a length long enough to reach the power switch (better to long than to short).(The pic of ori with tape measure shows this) Fold the end, take back to the windings and continue winding. Once you have wound a couple of turns again secure the winding against unwinding and slide some of the sleeving over the tap/loop that you had made a few turns before. Now bend to shape the tap to lie flat and feed out in direction of power switch. You may need to use something (nonflamable)to stop the tap from lifting, a few winds of ptfe tape would do it (you can get pac of 20 or so rolls from toolstation for a few £'s) Once you have finished all the windings and taps (You did remeber to refit the thermal cut out under one of the layers!! If that's where it was) Wrap with either the ptfe tape or the nomex. You will need to scrape the enamel off the ends of the taps before fitting crimp eyelets to allow connection to power switch.
If you have also bought the transformer varnish then it would be a good time to give the windings a good coating.

Hi Wayne,
Im looking at the Lincoln 180C is this one the same as yours? Did you experience any problems with the frequency? the machine is 60hz but the mains frequency is 50hz.
