V down is or rather should be dead easy. V up you just need the practice and training. The other week I put a few hours in v-up mig on big fillets for a test(not something I do much of now) at first I was wishing I could stick the job up instead, 2 hrs after I was wondering why I ever had the thought.

I can do it with mig not a problem. .but on stick....it gets the better of me..but your right..practice practice. ...

Well OK Kent, perhaps I was exaggerating slightly on the pay levels for a good pipe welder. There certainly were, if not still, some people making huge sums of money from doing it, it does require some skill and that can pay.

I've found the secret to vertical welding with MMA...
6010/6011 (cellulose, fast freeze any position) rods - just start at the top and go down and you're done, it'll work out as though it was laid flat.
V up is actually quite easy once you've got the hang of it, and it has happened where I've actually positioned items so I'm welding them in the vertical rather than horizontal.

I will give those rods a try and see how I get on...can't be no worse than the larva I produce when going up n down..but then don't do a lot of it..will have to get it sorted the. ..

This is my best advice I can give tack a plate up in the vertical position and use good 6013 or 7018s and just weave or run stringers like a pad and that will give u a feel and u can move on so forth some may disagree with me but it works for me but rods get the best u can afford they can make a big or small difference

No Hugh I hadn't, thanks for pointing it out.
To be honest I'm not sure whether I want to buy them or not - the price isn't bad at all, but that amount of 2.5's would last me for a very, very long time!
I suppose there's a good chance they'd accept say 85, or perhaps even 80.
Have you any wish to pay that sort of money to get them? I don't want to tread on your toes at all, particularly as you found them - in other words, I want to be certain that you won't be buying them before I think about making an offer.

It's always been that way but huge is relative only to those working for the living wage etc. Most of the guys I know still in it have other jobs to fill the big gaps between contracts or work away constantly

Don't get to technical 2.5 80 to 90 amps and get your arc length perfect flat then try other things! Master that and you will be able tell when your going well!!
