You missed Hatz. Superb diesel engines, likely the RR equivalent for this class of diesels. I have three or four (one in parts). The others have always started when required. The E75 has been with me for over 35 years and always an easy starter (has a cold start device on the pump as well as the option of screwing in a smouldering wick)

Yes, I forgot Hatz. I only got to see a couple of the 1-cyl Hatz, but yes, nice motor.
(One was I think in a really nice quality built generator set, I think built as a backup for very small rural telephone exchanges. It was an upright cabinet, with the Hatz in the top half on a shelf, with a slot cut out to allow a wide drive belt with ran a twin-bearing alternator pulley. It's the only AC Generator I ever saw with that small footprint "stacked" couple arrangement)

The local councils had quite a few 2-cyl aircooled Hatz sets, 12.5kva, 3ph, 3000rpm. Noisy as hell, but solid little things. I'd guess they'd been built in the 70's.

Most of the air cooled diesels of the era were noisy as hell, got a four pot Deutz on a stump grinder and that thing is at head height when in use.

The Lombardini engine must be knackered....... runs on lidls chain cleaner only, my £7 tin of easy start is brutal...it runs on it too but wow, not nice sounding,

Had it running backwards after a late squirt and it ran on its own, this made me double check the tappets, ( am I right n thinking if they were not set correct the timing could allow this to run backwards, its not running at the rev' s it should but holding steadyish...

whats the thoughts after seeing this, I have the engine on the bench now, just looking at it wondering if its worth taking the head and barrel off.

Pretty hard to tell lol. Tbh it was mainly the bigger industrial Deutz oil & air cooled multis that I was on about - really well-made, quality kit. But if its that era of Deutz, chances are it's a good un.

might be worth sending that away to get checked out before I do much else. i have not really been in about diesels much but did wonder on the atomising or not as the case may be. thanks

Most diesel engines are capable of running backwards, it's just that the injection timing will be quite retarded, so they won't run that well.
The injector doesn't look like the best, but I don't think the small engines inject at that high a pressure, and I've never personally tested an injector on a small engine, so I wouldn't want to say for definite that that is a problem. Especially since the 4 jets seem very similar.

If you could find somebody with an old injector tester, you could at least check the injector opening pressure.

However as you've probably realised, parts replacements on these engine can quite quickly mount up to more than a suitable replacement.

I agree, they are also a great tool for smashing large volumes of diesel through an injector and dislodging crap from the seats. Another trick to detect an injector with a poor seat is to remove the injector pipe and crank the engine over while observing the pipe union on the injector, any bubbles or dribbles coming back are a sure sign of a duff seat.

So I guessed I might as well pull the injector apart to see what was going on or not as the case maybe, the needle in the nozzle was absolutely stuck fast, 5 hours in the ultrasonic bath at work and it still never gave up, okay its obvious its knackered, lets see how much effort it takes to come out, it took gripping the nib of the needle in a pillar drill chuck rotating it by hand while warming with a blow torch tapping carefully down on the nozzle body, yep its still knackered but I have a replacement 2nd hand injector on route home.

With some luck now the replacement injector with fire this engine up.

Spot on, the replacement injector has a totally different blast when I pulled the engine over with it turned up, put it in the engine and it started first pull, compressor disconnected at that point, its a bit heaver to pull over with the belt to the compressor on, still not bad, gave it a run for 5 mins or so to clear it out a bit, not a bad result, thanks all for the input.

You can probably sort the old injector, with brasso and a bit of patience
