For me, a very simple solution was to connect a leather bib.
This stops fumes to come through the helmet and avoids, in my case of aluminum welding, sun burn of the throat.
Another black cloth to keep the radiation off my ears.
Both can be bottoned off.
Don't be afraid of ....
This is of course no substitute for a proper mask.

Arco (http://www.arco.co.uk/) do a huge range of respirators including own brands, they have branches all over. Go to a branch and get their catalogue "The Big Red Book" lots of other goodies in it and good descriptions. Their list prices are often high but if you open an account they give huge discounts.

Arco list on these is £26.67 +VAT pack of 5 but the "Premier" disposable one which protects against more fumes is the 3M 9928 @ £41.67 but thats for 10 so actually cheaper!
Like I said, they do mega discounts for account holders (you have to ring and negotiate before you order/collect - no good just walking in and saying "I have an account" even if you have, the shop people can't make discount decisions). I buy latex disposable gloves and the price is about half the listed price (and cheaper than I've ever seen them at the boot sale!).
