LORCH Mig 400

quick question about a lorch we had borrowed from a friend
when working on a rsj, welder at one end and another at the other end, everytime the murex welds the lorch cuts out and E24 comes up on screen.

What causes this ?

Hes looking to sell it but it looks like it doesnt like our other welders welding on the same item of steel
Have tried it with the esab and the Kemppi's

Any thoughts

Never heard of that happening before. What model is is? A MicorMig?

Did you have a good work return on both machines?

The issue could be that the current is finding an easier path to ground back through the Lorch earth connection and through the mains than via the murex!

I don’t have a micormig but I reckon E24 is an over-voltage or over-current Error. Which would be exactly what you would get if the current is tracking back from the murex through the Lorch.

You say you’ve tried other machines with the Lorch and it still does it? Did you use a different work return?

This might be ignorance, but... what if the phases are wired differently from each welder, and is "in phase" or something? For the 5 mins to swap two phases over in the plug, it's worth ruling out.

What voltages you adjust?
Pulse or standard?
Both power sources are isolated so its possible that your murex will feed the Lorch voltage control.
Try standard mig without pulse and make sure both welder are same voltage.

too much load on the incomer, volts dropping off when they've both welders running? that would explain why it happens with other welders, common supply????
easy enough to measure, just a multi meter on volts....

The machines don’t all use the same codes from what I’ve seen. The codes on my HandyTig aren’t the same as on the Mig.

Just had a look at this. There isn't an actual Error 24 code for the MicorMIG.

Could it be error 02-4? (Two dash four) This is displayed when the input mains spike or are too high.

The UK's largest structural steel company, Severfield in North Yorkshire now has around 130 MicorMIG at one of their fabrication facilities and around 30 MicorMIG at another smaller site. All of which welding on the same RSJ's with other multiple machines. There is no reason why you cant weld with multiple machines on the same job, without an issue, but you also have to ensure that no voltage is leaking back into any of the machines.

This is more important with Inverters more so because they will actually tell you that there is an issue. With more simple transformer machines, the issue is still present but you just don't know about it. It is the same with low input mains or when you have a phase down, people assume that Inverters suffer more with this, but its not that, its just the fact that if the machine isn't receiving what its supposed to it will tell you and flag up an error. Where as with a Transformer machine it will continue to operate, but the welder will be oblivious and the real issue is that the welder thinks he is welding at 28 volts in line with a procedure (as an example) but the reality is that the actual welding voltage will be lower as the machine isn't receiving the necessary input mains voltage. What I am trying to say is that its a problem for both style of machines, but only one of them will tell you.

Talked to the welders the day and it does it on the murex and on one of the esabs but not the Kemppis or the other esabs

Without being there to run some tests I am not saying there is a problem with anything, because I can’t from where I am based on the info I have so far.

However there is no reason that you shouldn’t be able to run the MicorMIG on a workpiece with other machines. The error code directly relates to input mains voltage, how is the power supply? Is it conventional mains? Perhaps it is spiking when the other Transformer machines are used at the same time? Maybe some of the welding voltage is leaking from the torches of said machines? Maybe it’s the torch connected to the MicorMIG?? It’s very hard to say without actually being there

A calibration isn’t really a service or fault finding exercise of the machine it’s only validating that the meters on the front are accurate to +\- 10%

You need to get an engineer in to look at your machines and then electrician to look at your wiring.

no mains comes in to the consumer cabinet, then each item in the work shop has its own direct cable and socket from the consumer
