MachineMart 23cfm 5.5HP 200l compressor, any good?

currently using a 3HP 14cfm compressor that can't run a gun and air fed helmet at the same time. Looking for something more manly that will run anything I throw at it. On the VAT free deal,
Clarke SE26C200 Industrial Air Compressor (400V)

is priced at £689.00. I could sell my 3HP belt drive and a direct drive to help towards it, but what is it like in everyone's opinion?

looks a verry good machine and will be verry reliable being 3 phase slow running . 23 cfm will well cover it

I've got two MM compressors they are brilliant, one the presure switch failed on after 10 years of daily use, I maintain them I.e oil changes and daily draining, got a new switch a massive cost of 20 quid and hope for another ten years of service, I'd by another any day! Ace support for parts too.

1 is 150l 15cfm the other a 50l 15cfm both single phase cast iron pumps.

Well if I do go for it, I will have my existing compressors for sale... I have a Mm 100k 3HP belt drive and a no name direct drive of similar spec. Might help to offset the cost and I can then feed everything from one airline. I think I am talking myself into it!

Well the deed has been done. I went for the model 25 in the end as it apparently has an "after cooler" and the pump is a cast Italian made unit, rather than a Chinese alloy pump, or at least that was the sales hype!

I assume that it isn't going to be fitted with a plug and note a 1" BSP outlet connection I will have to deal with. I got a set of anti vibration mounts at the same time at ridiculous expense, I would have made my own if I had realised what they wanted nearly £30 for!

Something I couldn't work out from the information is whether or not it comes with cable attached? If not I need to see if I can get a length of suitable flex. Is it YY cable?

This being 5.5HP and 3 phase, what cable do I need? I am assuming 1.5mm as the load is spread across the 3 phases? Can I buy a length of say 5 metres off the roll?

Cef sell cable by the metre and have a branch in gloucester at eastville close there's also wilts electrical in bristol road but not sure if they sell off the roll

You might get away with 1.5mm sq cable as that is 16A. You can get 5 metres of 3184Y cable in 2.5mm sq from CPC. Order code CB17406 is less than 8 quid.

That is only 4 core. I have a part roll of YY cable that I could perhaps try if I only need 4 cores. I was under the impression I would need 3 phases, Neutral and Earth though?

No neutral required, just 3 phases and CPC.

Most useful, thanks. I will try my roll of YY cable and see how warm it gets in use. At least I will be able to try the damn thing out and refinish some panels. Last time, I used one compressor for the air fed mask through the filter pack and the other compressor for the gun, with a water trap. Once the panels had dried, they had surface microblisters, so that was a waste of my time. That is really what prompted replacing them with one big one.

Try www.online-cables.co.uk for what you're wanting @ajlelectronics - their website is a bit basic but their prices are very keen. I've used them before and they dispatch quickly, you can get all sorts of cable (four core H07) by the metre.

Compressor has arrived and I just need to go and collect it somehow! Then the clean air feed needs sorting, but I should be able to plumb the intake through an outside wall and put the filter outside.


Made some space for it and so my portable compressors are shortly to be for sale. I have a member here interested in the belt drive Air Master, so he gets first dibs, but the direct drive 3HP will be available once the new one is plumbed in.
