Magnet sweeper

I am going to make one, I know you can buy them but all a bit too big, so this will be 240-300mm long. I made a swarf pick up tool before which has worked great, so same idea, magnets in a tube, pull them away to drop.

Ordered a pack of these 60*10*5 magnets, probably use 4 or two rows of 4 to be stronger.

Idea is to stick them in a plastic bar which will be a close fit in a tube. To pull them away it will be rotated.

I'm wondering if you can use electricity to make something non-magnetic? Ie. Press a button to dump the catch which would save battery life considerably?
On the other hand, permanently magnetic ones pick up all sorts of crud in storage..

An interesting idea with a number of potential ways you could do it. But you'd need to be using permanent magnets to start off with and somehow "disabling" them. You can do that mechanically as with the typical "magnetic switch" by using a solenoid. I'm assumig that's not the idea.

So you would be wanting to cancel out the permanent magnetic field by introducing an electromagnetic field in the opposite polarity I guess. That is different from the switch which rather than disabling the magnetic field, simply redirects it into itself.

If you were to use an electromagnet in opposition to a permanent magnet, my seat of the pants guess would be either it would destroy the permanent magnet or generate heat during the process which would also degrade it over time.

It probably wouldn't work either since all you would be doing is changing the shape of the magnetic field which would still permeate free space (and stick to anything it can find albeit in a more interesting patten).

Look at how a magnetic dial indicator base (or magnetic chuck) works. It has a switch on it to enable or disable the magnetism. Instead of your grubby hand operating the switch, put a latching solenoid on it and then it is electrically controlled. It would only draw power when you switch it from one state to the other.

Im not going to over complicate it with magnetic switches or electonicals. The magnet is simply going to rotate out of range of the swarf, which will be caught by the shape of the tube, it will have a sticking out sheet to prevent it moving around.

Amazing. Love that "spring" unit. Wonder if that could be made to work with a pattern of regular magnets?

Magnets arrived. 4 of them stuck to a 16mm round bar inside this tool tube. I wedged the bar with packing paper to stop it rotating - it was droping everthing off as I lifted it up to have a look.

Thats what it picked up after a quick sweep of the old lounge carpet! Quite impressed with the effectiveness.
Consider I havent done much steel recently and have used a large fishing magnet over the lounge a few days ago too - it was much less effective.

Done the hallway and picked up the same again. Continued to the shed/hallway door mat and the mat in the shed, which I did last night with my pick up tool.

It works!

It was easy to push the swarf to the end and off with a bit of tissue. Doesnt need be any more comlicated than this..

I put a very strong manet in a plastic bucket to pick up swarf. Lift magnet from bucket to release swarf. Doesn’t work too well on brass and aluminium.

Or 300 stainless which is what Im using now. If its on a machine, make some steel swarf after and it will pick up most of the alu and brass. Try to turn brass for big chips - deep cut with very low feed.

I have the same issues. And to add to the problem, my magnetic sweeper doesn't seem to want to pick up stainless swarf.

Lounge again, only a few days later .. Hardly done much steel! Just a bit of milling. How is it getting in, is the question? I leave shoes and boilersuit in the shed when I come in.

It's life Kram, but not as we know it.

I even find bits of swarf in the bedroom sometimes.
Or in my jeans pockets.
