Theyre to weld round the sides, im making it with removable pans for the charcoal so some of them are to weld to the frame for support and some are to weld to the pans.

for the grills i wanted it was actually cheaper to buy the bbq unit

but to give you an idea what i wanted was this size also known as a party bbq

the handy thing was it had holes in the bottom so you scrap the ash into the drawer below it great for an easy clean out

unlike this one i also have the upper level as well as still got the whole lot and its 20 years old

I buy them a box at a time and the buggers have changed the design so they are now galv not painted. No good for what I do. I’m buying all the painted ones I can find.

I have no issues with a winter bbq, not quite managed one on christmas day yet, had one on boxing day though.

Tongue in cheek comments aside, citric acid will remove galv - as will most (any?) acids such as brick cleaner.
