Making a 'funny noise' ??

Wife said to me - the washing machine is making a funny noise!! So it got stripped down ...here's the culprit ...I've fixed a fair few in my time but these 'spiders' are new to me. The bearings are actually perfect but the spider isn't..

It's a Samsung so I searched for a new part and got prices ranging from £55 up to well over £100 ...ended up ordering one from France via DPD £27.00 delivered!!

Hopefully end of funny noise .....

That looks like it's been eaten away by corrosion.

You're right ..it's made of some sort of alloy and bolted to the stainless steel drum ..could be some sort of galvanic reaction?? The rest of the machine was like new inside no water leaks and kept indoors since new ... hope the new one lasts a bit longer as getting the drum out was a real pita .....

I find it's usually her humming along to the radio.

Seen one do the same years ago, could it be down to water supply and detergents used or reaction as you say, I'd say its not all that common to fail like that as this is only the second one I've seen, I may be wrong though

Yes...just realised this is continually submerged in the washing water so it could be the detergent/heat/water has attacked the alloy over time - I might paint the new one!!

Yes, I think so too. If it was galvanic corrosion that would occur primarily where the two metals meet. So a coat of paint would head off both scenarios, which ever the cause maybe.

I’ve got to ask , are you washing concrete blocks ? And loading them with a trebuchet ??

On a more serious side , I’m suprised that you were able to split the outer drum as most are glued these days

No Sam, not washing concrete blocks .......we use the dishwasher for them

It's a Samsung ecobubble washer/drier with the digital (10 year guarantee ) motor and has performed faultlessly for years. The drum is held together with 18 bolts. Stripping the machine down was only possible with my Makita impact driver as everything was VERY tight!! The whole machine is in perfect nick including the drum bearings and seal (I've ordered a new seal though) so rather than buy a new machine (£800 ) I'm fixing this for about £30 in parts. I may paint the new spider as I do think this is a bad design being plain alloy....

Hopefully we'll get a few more years from it.......

That is actually respectable on your part given the whole throw away culture these days .

I know the laws changed re washing machines regarding repairs . As for so long , apart from the top end makes the outer drums were fused / glued so you couldn’t split them . Have read of people cutting them then gluing and bolting , but I didn’t fancy the risk of 100 litres of water over the oak floor .

I had a hot point and managed to get a radiator bleed key wedged you the back and it screamed when it ran , where the “spider” is , and after gettting the drum casing out , couldn’t split it , even had the bolt holes but they glued it . Got a quote for a new drum …… £150 , for an 8 year machine . So just binned it and bought the same , but new for £190 . No brainier and also ended up with the compulsory garden “brazier” from the scrap .

Hum we have what sounds like the same model of Samsung, something to look forward to NOT! Still thanks for posting, I hope I remember this thread if I need to do the same.

I'm sure the spider is on the outside of the drum and dont get wet.....??

The spider is mounted to the drum...the drum is encased between two plastic 'tubs' that hold the water so the spider gets very, very wet ... and spiders don't like water!!!

This machine does not have a belt and pulley but a 'digital' motor mounted directly to the splines of the spider ...it's very clever, very quiet, but not good for an alloy part over many years of use ... and the motor has a 10 year warranty!!!

It must be the centrifugal forces making the debris stick around the centre of the spider ,causing the corrosion of the part

Centrifugal forces would be throwing all the debris to the inside of the drum away from the spider
