Gerry reason I ask about your water supply is that I work on medical endoscope washer and they have to use a very low "foaming" detergent to avoid air getting round the circulation system which can cause circulation errors AND cavitation. Cavitation can eat away at components in our machines. These machines are preferably feed with RO water and or softened water. With the softened water the detergent can foam more. RO is worse for some parts of pluming as it is water that has had virtually every thing striped out of it and wants to pull back in any elements it can from say copper pipes, brass fitting and even some grades of stainless steel !
As a side note we had a Hoover washing machine that had a very similar construction "spider"on the rear of the inner drum. Tat cracked on the outer "feet" where it attaches to the outer lip of the inner drum. Think a lot of that was caused by the wife over loading the machine but she won't have it...Have to be caerful I don't upset her and end up myself doing the washing.

Just to finish this thread...parts arrived yesterday, fitted the two new bearings and oil seal, decided not to bother painting the new spider as we are changing to liquid detergent so maybe that will help but if I get a few more years from it it was worth the effort!
Pretty straightforward re-assembling it but it's a heavy beggar to maneuver back into it's 'hole' in the garage!! Just finished it's first full load wash with 1400rpm spin and all seems well ...I'm relieved to say

Thank you for posting the conclusion and pictures.
It does look like an earlier version of ours, I am now wondering if it is the eco bubbles which are causing the cavitation on the aluminium spider as well as in the dirty washing.

It’s the detergent that causes the corrosion - it’s very alkaline, a bit like weak caustic soda. Not good for aluminium alloys. Best painted with an etch primer first, then maybe some alloy wheel paint from Halfrauds.

Not good for concrete either. Quite a few years ago we had to do a lot of work in the stations on the Northern line. The sleepers and the concrete were rotting away in the stations so they had to shut the lines on the weekend, break out the concrete, clear it all away, get rid of the timber sleepers, hang new concrete sleepers, line and level it all then re-concrete it all in with fast setting concrete. A monumental taks that went of for months and must have cost millions.

We would have long periods of idle time and in one such period I got talking to one of the engineers about why they were only changing the sleepers at the platform and not in the tunnels. He said that the concrete was more rotten at the platforms and he couldn't explain why. I said "have you ever been here at night after the trains stop running? Where do you think the cleaners tip the dirty water after they have finished cleaning the platform every night?"

Another possibility might be a small current leakage from say the motor (as it's mounted directly to the inner drum shaft) through the ally via the water causing electrolysis (?) to eat away at the metal.

An addendum to this thread.... I woke up in the middle of the night wondering if I had tightened up the 6 bolts on the stator........as there were 6 I should remember tightening them in a specific order ...and I didn't remember doing this!!

If just one came loose that would be the end of the motor and the machine..... So I decided I had to check. Got the machine out again and undid the rotor bolt with the Makita impact wrench but couldn't budge it off the splines ..I had put back together with copious red thread lock and it had gone into the splines. An hour later I had fashioned a puller and got the darn thing off. Now ...........had I tightened the bolts ?????? NO NO NO I had not

So tightened them up in criss cross fashion - very tight ..... put rotor back on put machine back in (all sounds easy but it isn't) and managed to get a good nights sleep ..... stupid boy!!!!
