Galvanised grating, super strong, and generally pretty flat. Top it with sheet or not .

Where is the best place to buy this type of grating as I'm looking to replace some decking and wanted to industrialise it?

Being galvanised, you won't want to get it too hot but with a top plate on it it should be fine.

I had mine when we dismantled 2 paint booths. Worth keeping your eyes open as they come up on ebay....

Plus all the crud from grinding and slag falls through and you don't have to clean it off. On the down side all your small tools, and nuts and bolts fall through it.

Only sheet half of it and use the open half for grinding, cutting, etc and the sheeted side for small things and assembly.

If you can't find any for sale you could make some with a load of small flat bar and a simple jig.

Find a fabricator with some spare, we chuck loads away. It's not that expensive, and you can buy it non galvanised. About 175 quid a 6m x 1m sheet for 30*3/41*100 i think.

Scrap yards in Aberdeen or get friendly with someone on a supply boat, the platforms and drillers have loads of Kennedy grating and bits often get scrapped.

If I was to make a welding table would 40x40x2mm box be ok? i.e strong enough

What about a 3mm top braced underneath?

I built my work bench from Dexion forklift racking - it was free and is easily strong enough for my workshop, it doesn't flex when I swing on things in the vice with 36" stillsons.

Just my preference but I prefer a solid flat top.
I don't just weld at my bench but I do quite a bit of fitting and assembly. I'd be forever loosing nuts and bolts through the mesh.

Alternative is to have a flat top hinged... on top of mesh. Be no good to me though my bench is never empty. lol

3mm top with a few stiches holding it down underneath to plenty of top cross members and plenty around the top outer edges really is perfectly adequate for most uses / users , you don't need spend a fortune for general lighter - medium fabrication or heavy duty DIY
