There’s a few types of JB Weld JT, does this looks like the one?

Jeez, just had a poke around for that……I see what you mean….
Yeah thats the stuff, Takes about 24 hrs to properly cure. Fast one is no good except for light duty.
Slow cure JB weld is fine.

I can't really see that getting over 60degrees if the engines draw water in from outside the boat, it passes through the engine then out the exhaust. Mine barely get over 40 on the temp gauge after hours of running.
I'd also imagine it's low pressure as it's a non sealed system

I spent ten years repairing boat engines / buying and selling used parts, self employed. Or as Dell Boy Trotter would say Self Unemployed. 3 real bad summers put an end to it.
Put an engine in a tug boat once with the largest floating crane in Europe. (Used for lifting in sections of the M3 motorway bridge over the River Lagan Belfast) Hook was bigger than the six cylinder diesel engine. Crane opperator lined her in with mm perfection.

What is the actual application of the heat exchanger ? Is it for a partially sealed cooling system or something else ?
Boat heat exchanger to keep salt water outside the engine block and head.

Yes, sealed cooling system.
It's like if you had a car radiator in a bucket, and the bucket was constantly having sea / river water pumped through it , to keep the system cool.

In my experience, the coolant is in the water jacket / metal box you can see, hence the radiator cap.
Raw cooling water is pushed through, under pressure, a heat exchanger , in this box, maintaining the temperature of the coolant.

Is there clearance for an O ring to push between the neck and the tank as a seal then float one of the high temp adhesives round the neck tank to lock it in.
I you don't like the Belzona price the stuff made by "Lords" I was going to recommend would freak you.
To solder or use adhesives you are going to Clean, Clean, have it Spotless including oil of your hands.
With the solder tin both items load the neck with solder heat the cast till the solder runs and push the loaded neck into the casting hoping you have got enough heat to melt the solder on the neck.
It is going to need a lot of heat on the casting

All of ours are much cooler 70-80.
I know how the heat exchanger works and it’s commonest use.
pretty much all of ours are now sealed systems, even the exhaust is now part of the system with excess raw water being dumped post catalytic converters.

Or is it for a calorifier ?
my reason for asking being are other chemicals in the water, eg antifreeze. Knowing this may change the method of sealing the filler neck to the body. Methanol/ ethanol in antifreeze can easily destroy some epoxies.

Hi Bullet, just to confirm the epoxy would indeed be in contact with antifreeze but not submerged in it. I'm going to go with JB Weld long cure and monitor it carefully. I eyeball the engine daily when in use and I wouldn't expect it fail catastrophically if it did affect the epoxy, it would just start leaking. The Volvo Penta antifreeze I'm using is glycol based btw.

Call me old fashioned but I use genuine Volvo Penta Type 90. Green; a touch expensive but hey it’s been good since 1996.
