I did get some a few years ago from Travis Perkins, specially ordered in. Like the stuff I remember. Heavy with the individual plys really dense / close grained. When I did the surround for my part sunken bath.

At first glance that looked a bit like an open coffin


Avoid birch based ply for anything outside, it is one of the quickest decaying woods.

If it helps, I have a slab of chainsaw cut leylandii, which is a very slow decaying wood. With sealer and kept of the ground it would last ages outside.

Interesting fact - treated wood is often the worst types for outside use, as its cheaper, the process hides what it is.

TBF it's heavy on the saw blades if they're cutting it up cut to size.

For sure, I cut some to fit a friends Vauxhall Combo floor, so not that much but it took the sharp look off the cutting edges of a Trend laminate blade, I was sad, did not voice my loss or angle for beer recompense but my remark tells of my loss. You know when the blade is no longer tip-top, it makes a slightly different sound, thats the good bit before the cuts get slower and slightly more raggedy.

Facebook marketplace is where I can get good quality birch ply for about £2 for that size

I get small offcuts of birch ply from work. It goes black from mold if there's the slightest hint of damp. It's good for dry indoor use only.

Be careful when buying ply. A lot of people think that exterior plywood is marine ply. Generally available stuff is WBP (water and boil proof) prices have shot up over the last couple of years, but it is far removed from proper marine plywood.

You will NOT get this from B&Q or your local merchant off the shelf. It will either be from a specialist supplier or special order, and it is around four times the price of exterior WPB.

Where are you ? Is it still crates, or has it been flat packed ? Not packed, but you know what I mean.

Usterbe, that ordinary decent Water and Boilproof Ply was good enough for outdoor use for years.
I have a bit about 8'x 3', that's been exposed to the weather, unpainted, for 20+ years and isn't deteriorating at all.
However, all that came screeching to a halt with the construction boom pre-2008 crash, when the market was flooded with inferior rubbish masquerading as WBP.
It got so you just can't believe what the stockist or seller tells you, because almost guaranteed they're either lying or just don't know for sure.

Can you not get h3.2 treated plywood in the UK?
That would be my go to for exterior plywood as long as it is not immersed.

Interesting. Two of my mate's both work for a packaging company, traditionally it was custom timber crates, now just flat pack cardboard.

Back in the day, circa 1990 I roofed my block built workshop in 5'x5' 5/8" birch faced ply they gave me. Cover boards for "good" timber is what they were. Superb stuff, rock hard and dense. I'm actually back there now as it's a rental place. The 3 layers of felt have finally given up and the birch is all shot.

It'll be OSB and rubber for the re-roof.

Plywood today is nothing like it used to be, most is made in the far east & regardless of what they say it is most exterior & "marine" ply might as well be stuck together with wallpaper paste.
A guy in a local boatyard is building a catamaran, he ordered marine plywood & managed to source some at a reasonable price, the importer even guaranteeing it. Built one of the hulls & left some offcuts of ply outside in the rain.... They delaminated within days. 4 months of work down the drain. The hull had to be scrapped.
The supplier did pay up but not enough to recoup the lost time.
Back in the day Dutch Brynzeel was regarded as the best, it was superb stuff, its still available but hard to get & hideously expensive.
Then there is Robbins Ltd in Bristol, they do a range of decent proper marine ply & will sell part sheets. But be sitting down when you look at the prices.
Otherwise you might as well use shuttering ply.

Im in selby, a bit far for you to collect?
there was a few "unflatpacked" ones but they are gone as were in the way,
the flat pile is now only 1.5m high

I'll just say we use marine ply on our boats, and it's a bit of a lottery, some will rot out in 18 months, some will last longer.

Their top of the range marine ply is Super elite & it has a 25 year guarantee, that is £164 for 6mm, £242 for 12mm, £356 for 18mm.
