Make a nice lamp......
Friction powered mate. Turn the handle to generate light. Marlin’s patented emergency light, now with winch attachment!

must be worth that if you have a use for it?
The problem is this sort of stuff came and went before the web so unless a devotee catalogues it it will be lost in the annals of time.I’m amazed there’s no info on this thing on the web. It’s a very nicely made winch, and you’d need considerable resources to make it so one would assume it was manufactured in some numbers originally.
The small parts are fairly easy to rescue from the paint. Almost everything is made from non-ferrous metal, only the gear (which isn’t hardened). I charged the spindle with new grease, I love this bit!

I have a marlin 3 to 1 winch. It is made of gun metal and bronze. John Mitchell. New Zealand.Does anyone know anything about winches? @winchman ?
I got offered a cast bronze winch and haggled it down to $55. Must be almost worth that in scrap. It’s heavy as! I can’t find any info on it on the web, takes a steel wire rope. No idea what I’ll do with it atm. I like it though!
This is similar to mine. An old friend that served his time and working life in a foundry told me that my winch was made of gun metal and bronze. John Mitchell new ZealandThat’s the winch ticked off. It’s off to a new home tomorrow. I saw a small pleasure craft being worked on in the harbour last week and decided to ask the owner if they’d like to buy a vintage winch - and he did! The boat is from 1925 so it’s a fitting home for the winch.
Lovely winch - if only it wasn't a vertical video - turn your phone sideways!I had some trouble with the bush for the gear being too tight - no problem, when you have a three jaw for your wood lathe any matter! A very light skim and polish has it turning like new. The bush is oil fed whereas the spindle and ratchet is greased.
A test fit of everything was the order of the day. I did a quick video, too.
Yes, I will go back in time five years and do this.Lovely winch - if only it wasn't a vertical video - turn your phone sideways!
