Measuring a basin bottle trap?

I need to get a new bottle trap to replace the totally useless one that Victorian Plumbing thought was acceptable to send with their sink pack, as I need to click and collect it I can't browse what I need. There seems to be 32mm & 40mm . Do I just measure the pipe diameter? And what about the waste as the one I have has two sizes ie one smaller one screwed into the larger?
The sealing washer is getting pushed up into the chrome waste pipe when I tighten it up causing a leak (I'm not over tightening it) looks like the waste is too thin and the washer too soft and together they don't work.

It's got to fit this size waste. Looks like 40mm to me.

The thread looks like 1 1/2" BSPP.
Waste pipe is 32 or 40mm so just order to match what's already there.

dont use the washer to seal it as it needs silicone they always leak down the damn thread

more so on pot basin sinks

thin layer on pot sink use washer thin layer again put through pot silicone yet again push washer up thread and then bolt up make sure is on threads as well as the underneath pot always leaks there

Soft washer on the basin side with a smear of LSX and some on the underside washer to seal the thread.

Basin is usually 32mm, sinks, showers and baths are usually 40mm

It leaking on the joint between the waste and trap not the sink.
See the first photo where the washer is pushed up into the waste.

The rubber seal should be conical, slide it over the pipe and then offer it up. There should be a plastic backing ring between it and the nut. Use some silicone grease or washing up liquid to lubricate everything so that it seats properly and doesn't skew the rubber.

washer cuts on those threads always do caused by over tightening a replacement washer would do it

Never have much luck with them.
Ptfe around the chrome thread usually does the trick

Never buy traps from those sort of places
Have 3 or 4 that don't fit standard 32/40mm pipes. Never did work out what they were supposed to connect to

It's not the sink joint it's the seal between the bottom of the chrome waste and the plastic trap.

If it's leaking there check the sink, I did one a while ago that had a chunk missing, silicone galore sorted it.

The trap usually sits into the chrome outlet slightly with an o ring, night be a daft question but, the fitting on top of that trap looks to come off, it's not upsidedown is it

Wash basins use 32mm traps. The thread on the trap is 1 1/4" BSP, which has an OD of 42mm.

Baths, showers and sinks use 40mm traps. The thread on the trap is 1 1/2" BSP which has an OD of 48mm.

Buy a new chrome waste of good quality (you need a slotted one) and a McAlpine trap from Screwstation/Toolfix.

You can buy adaptors that allow you to fit a bigger trap to a smaller waste but these will come from a proper plumber's merchant.

@eLuSiVeMiTe the trap and waste came with the sink, I've just ordered a new McAlpine one from SF so hopefully that'll sort it.
I had grief with the kitchen sink trap that came with the Wickes kitchen a few months back, utter junk. Again I think that's now a McAlpine one.

Victorian Plumbing have shown themselves to be ****e in the last couple of weeks! I needed a new seal for one of their still current towel radiators and they don't sell them! Useless company.

That's what it came with!

The seal for the waste kit should be flat and sit agaisnt the bottom of the thread not inside. That washer looks to be for the outlet into the 32mm pipe (compression ).

Learnt my lesson using there cheap fittings myself

^^^^^had that on baths before drain part come in 6 different pieces said to mate then this is going to cause a problem but it was after shops where closed so added plenty of mastic waitedtill next day still leaked like a sieve

said carp to it down screwfix bought a all in one version 30 mins later up and running

now when i do a bath as there about £7 i just buy one ive even been asked why are you not fitting this one i replyed i can if you want but if you dont want a leak id use this one ive fitted meny and dont get problems up to you
