It is flat but as soon as I tightened the damm thing up it got pushed into the inside of the chrome waste! POS!

By the looks if yours as said before you have the tapered rubber in there
As yours looks to be an extending neck have you got the compression rubber mixed with the flat rubber in my pick
And a but of ptfe added when installing helped keep the rubber in place if you have to give a good nip up
As this some times its nit that easy as you get nuts that will not drop down as in this one
See where this one has 2 plastic rings to stop the nut from falling to far (god knows why )
Plumbers Mait, roll a ball in your hands until it is soft and pliable, roll it into a bead and put it around like an "O" ring.

^^^^ used to think plumbers mate was the greatest but in its place and lsx and silicone do betters jobs and quicker now a days

Right heres the result of buying something made properly compared to the crap supplied by Victorian Plumbing!
You can see that on the left is the McAlpine one and that has an inner ridge to stop the seal from pushing out when you tighten the waste up.
The rubbish Victorian Plumbing one has no ridge and that's why it doesn't work!
The McAlpine one also has a much thicker seal.
And without the seals in place.
