MIG Beads sitting too high

Sorry don't know the product name of the gas. I'm in France at the moment and you can only get gas on a contract here, it's really expensive so I'm buying it in from Poland - reputable company selling to the welding & engineering market.

More than likely it'll be 18% CO2, remainder Argon.... that's a european standard gas, also labelled M21 gas.

People see a large peaky mig bead and think, too much wirespeed... best dial it back. Usually they're wrong... the voltage might be wrong, but usually they need more wirespeed and voltage, and to travel faster.

My Kemppi is fully synergetic so I just dial in material=steel and thickness=3mm and it's 99% of the time correct at setting it up. I use the wire speed as a trim control which does fine adjustment off the automatic wire speed the machine has selected.

The OPs synergetic sounds different to mine....never even used the Kemppi in manual mode. I think what I'm saying is if I didn't have the Kemppi I'd struggle to setup I think!

Think I am doing this too, weaving gets me lower profile but perhaps not a good solution. I should try and just speed up I guess.

So from the bottom to the top all I did was just change the voltage thats it left the wire speed the same my machine is not synergistic its set it and forget it but as mentioned voltage doesn't give u pen its the wfs that gives the pen

That's a great help thank you. I did similar but the results were nowhere near as night and day as that. I'm beginning to suspect gas - as suggested by an earlier commenter. I looked at a few vids online after the comment about pure Argon and the sound of the arc, the soot and spatter are very similar to the videos.

Quick thought....are you sure you have the wire thickness set correctly on the synergetic? The Kemppi presets everything based on 0.8mm wire....am guessing there must me an input for wire thickness (or it has a preset thickness in mind for the auto setup maybe).

Thanks, but yes, it's the correct wire setting. Everything is set right - I've reset it a few times to the correct synergy settings, then tried running a few beads before tweeking the voltage, amps and inductance, but always the same result. It really is looking very much like a gas fault (pure argon and not argon mix) I've ordered another bottle 18/82 (25/75 not readily available here) and I'll be doing backflips if all is okay - I'm building a large steel frame to take a 5m x 10m mezzanine inside my house and all the welds will be exposed so I want it to look good. I'll resort to MMA if I must, but I think that MIG would look better.

Your MMA welds looked pretty good to me....fingers crossed the gas sorts it.

I struggled with MMA...I just couldn't reset my brain to realise that with MMA the pool you see isn't the pool you get (like with MIG).

Yeah, it's more or less a pool within a pool isn't it. I'll be chuffed if it turns out to be gas, but I won't be broken-hearted if I have to use stick, there's the debate that stick may be stronger, but I'm not sure that's applicable to 3mm. I just thought that it was about time I got on board with MIG, seems a lot quicker and a nicer looking weld too. We'll see, I'll definitely post an update. Thanks for your input.

2 be fair i don't like synergistic mig sets because they normally only give you ball park figures it still needs fine adjustment from the operator and also its just practice and knowing what your looking for. I still make boo boos from time to time and I'm supposed to be a welder lol

lots of the you tube videos are pulling the puddle , I push it , pull if its a tight corner or the likes , maybe a more vertical torch angle too , that may help.

Surely the % co2 is too high for thin metal?

5% for thin stuff 15% for universal & 20%+ for thick.

Do a penetration dye test.

I've taken it from here in the past you pull the mma rod from the puddle but you push the mig wire into the puddle for better penetration.

When I want a hotter weld I just tell the machine it's using one size bigger wire. Usually works.
