It would be difficult to keep it on a straight line if one track encountered an obstruction it would spin round before you could engage the brake.

Is that through experience? Admittedly my experience in this setup is limited to the Argo but I've not found that to be the case but it is a rather specialist vehicle.

From memory my Argo doesnt do it either but its a 3:1 ratio from diff to drive wheels maybe that makes a difference
New argos have a completely different gearbox now has two diffs so no speeding up of one side when you break
The older bulldozers I have driven use clutches also to dis-engage drive to steer
I would use independent brakes to steer it, I think they done this for county conversions on Fordson tractors!

Hi 8ob,I have got a tracked Honda engined skip loader, that thing has a Peerless type transaxle which gives you forward and reverse, steering is by braking one track or the other. Lots up for grabs secondhand. Wouldn't be hard or expensive to copy the running gear.
Would it be possible the next time you are near the yard you could get a few close up pictures of drivetrain, no hurry mate!
What engine? It doesn't look like a Ford.

She explained that as well, it's her grandfather's shop and his old lathe/mill/hand tools etc. Doubt she'd have problems attracting sponsorship now apart from the slight problem of her location at this time.

I'm not sure which make it is, but talking to a forklift guy there's one brand where all their forklifts are hydraulic drive.... if you can fine a duff forklift there's two motors for you plus engine and hydraulics etc ?

Not that big knighty, if I was dozing anything it would just be a bit of snow, I would imagine a forklift that goes on the back of a truck like a Moffatt would have a similar setup!
I work on moffett's they use a single hydrostatic drive pump to power three motor's one on each wheel.

get an old one, then you have engine, hydraulic pump, the 2 motors you need and the control setup for them? (steering wheel etc)
They arnt skid steer though they have conventional steering. So you would need to work out how to make them turn in both directions without causing harm to the system. They are also well sort after and expensive. For the same price you could buy a tracked dumper and would get everything you need including tacks and track frames.
